Best Amsterdam Vegan Guide: Restaurants, Hotels, + More

Updated February 19, 2024

Amsterdam has a reputation for late night revelry but it is also home to a vast amount of culture, vegan food, and it’s one of the prettiest cities in Europe to boot! While partying and pot are readily available; after stepping off the train and getting swept up in this beautiful city, both became background noise.

With more canals than Venice, walking around Amsterdam is a treat; watch out for the bicyclists! A guide we met told us that they have an issue with people having too many bikes in the city — I chuckled because, in Detroit, cars are king.

This vegan Amsterdam guide will help you uncover the best vegan restaurants, shops, hotels, and so much more. You won’t need anything else to plan your adventure!

What To Do in Amsterdam

#1 Visit the Anne Frank House

Visitors have the opportunity to walk through the home (and museum) where Anne and her family lived while hiding from Nazis for two years while she wrote her famous diary. The museum includes a look at Jewish persecution during the war. This is very popular — I booked tickets weeks in advance. I got lucky because they had been sold out for weeks. As soon as you plan your trip, buy your tickets. If you can’t get tickets, check out an Anne Frank walking tour instead.

#2 Explore the city by bike

You can easily rent a bike and zip around the city on your own but a better way to see the sights and learn a little more about Amsterdam is on a bike tour. We took a bike tour that included the countryside which is a much easier place to bike than the city center! We also got an opportunity to learn about the history of windmills and their role in creating modern-day Amsterdam.

#3 Tour the Van Gogh Museum

The museum contains the largest collection of Van Gogh’s paintings and drawings in the world. It is popular and tickets must be purchased in advance for a selected timeslot. You can also opt to do a small group tour of the museum if you can’t get tickets on your own.

#4 Take a canal cruise

With 165 canals, there is no better way to see Amsterdam than on a boat tour! There are many types of cruises, some just to learn about the city, some focused on a certain topic or food, and some just for partying, so choose wisely!

#5 Don’t miss all of the eclectic markets

I love a good market and Amsterdam has plenty to explore! You can find markets full of antiques, clothing, food, flowers, and more. There were plenty of small food vendors also selling vegan and gluten-free food—including stropwafels (I really didn’t think I would get to try one)!

#6 Say Meow to kitties on De Poezenboot

If you’re like me and love kitties, you need to visit De Poezenboot — it is the only houseboat cat sanctuary! It is a charity; they house up to 50 cats, some are permanent residents. So, after you say hello, consider buying a t-shirt or leaving a few euros to help them out.

#7 Wander through the artsy Jordaan neighborhood

This little charming area includes the 9 straatjes’ (nine little streets) and is full of beautiful houses, cafes, restaurants, and shops. Also, if you like craft beer, make sure you check out Proeflokaal Arendsnest, it’s one of the best breweries in Amsterdam.
