The vegan food scene in Detroit is growing!

Although the pandemic did take a few stellar spots from the community, there is renewed hope that others will soon open their doors.

No matter if you’re visiting the city or the suburbs you’ll find a diverse assortment of tantalizing places to dine. From burgers loaded with mac-n-cheese to artfully styled mini cakes and everything in between.

It’s guaranteed; if you’re a vegan and visiting Detroit, you won’t go hungry! Start planning your eating adventure with this huge lineup of vegan and vegan-friendly restaurants in the Detroit area.

The Best Vegan & Vegetarian Restaurants in Metro Detroit

This lineup of vegan restaurants covers the entire Detroit area — whether you’re in Royal Oak or Grosse Pointe, you’ll find something nearby! If you’re thinking, hey you missed a spot! If it’s in the City of Detroit, it’s quite possibly in my Vegan Guide to Detroit! There was just no way I could pack every vegan-friendly spot in the area in one article — a good problem to have.

This vegetarian café is a longtime favorite of the community! They’ve been pushing the green life since the 70s — amazing, right!? Whatever you decide to dive into, make sure you start with their spinach artichoke dip, it is SO good, I wanted to eat the whole thing by myself!

#6 Neehee’s Indian Street Food

4924 Rochester Rd, Troy, MI 48085
The Patel brothers with their wives developed this vegetarian Indian hotspot with over 150 savory dishes! Vegan food can sometimes be a challenge with Indian cuisine but not at Neehee’s; they have a great vegan and gluten-free menu. The menu features a huge selection of dosas with savory dipping chutneys or my personal favorite, veg pakodas.

#7 Spacecat V-stro

255 W Nine Mile Rd, Ferndale, MI 48220
If you love breakfast and brunch, don’t miss the only vegetarian breakfast café in town, Spacecat V-stro! Their menu is full of bomb vegan delights. Check out their house-made biscuit sandwich; or if that doesn’t tickle your fancy maybe vegan chicken and waffles would.

The Unburger Grill is taking boring veggie burgers and amping them up! The menu is full of taste bud popping burgers, fries, nachos, and desserts. Pontiac’s first vegan restaurant is serving up all kinds of vegan comfort food magic — you’ll want to try a little bit of everything. The menu is packed with loaded tacos, mac-n-cheeze, creamy fettuccini, giant burgers, and so much more.

Vegan-Friendly Restaurants in Metro Detroit

Easily one of the best Japanese noodle spots in Detroit. They have an amazing selection of vegan ramen, pho, udon, rice bowls, and more. Whatever you decide to order, you must also get their steamed edamame. I know, on the surface that sounds boring but these are covered in chilis, lemon, sesame oil, and sea salt — it is a flavor party.

This Thai spot has a great selection of traditional dishes; from Pad Thai to curry noodles, you’re bound to find something to love. One of the best parts about visiting there (aside from the food, obviously) is everything is incredibly well marked. Quite a few dishes are vegan but there are many that can be made vegan for an additional charge.

#20 Ale Mary’s Beer Hall

316 S Main St, Royal Oak, MI 48067
One would not expect a beer hall to be a vegan-friendly destination, but Ale Mary’s has set out to change that perception. They have an entire vegan menu and even have a special vegan section on their grill! A trip is not complete without a bowl of McClure’s dill pickle soup and one of their eye-popping vegan milkshakes — definitely Instagram worthy.

#21 Anita’s Kitchen

22651 Woodward Ave, Ferndale, MI 48220
This Middle Eastern restaurant is a favorite spot of one of our favorite vegan bakers, Bre’Anna Johnston of Blck Cocoa Bakes. She loves Anita’s for its zesty and aromatic flavors. It is not 100% vegan but there are a lot of vegan and gluten-free options. My personal favorite is their tabbouleh. Unlike other Middle Eastern spots, they make their tabbouleh gluten-free, so it’s a rare treat that I get to enjoy!

#22 Como’s Restaurant

22812 Woodward Ave #100, Ferndale, MI 48220
You can’t leave Detroit without sampling our famous Detroit-style pizza but veganized! There are a few spots throughout town that offer this delectable vegan ‘za but Como’s is one of my favorites because their gluten-free crust is out of this world. You can build your own pizza or check out their pre-created options topped with veggies, chilies, and Violife cheese.

It seems improbable to find a deli with a full vegan menu, right? Oak House Deli has an entire vegan lineup of sandwiches, subs, and salads. And, if you’re thinking it’s another PB&J or roasted veggie panini, think again! Check out their vegan egg salad sandwich with crushed chickpeas, mayo, and dill on sourdough, or go a little green with a vegan corned beef salad with vegan provolone.

#28 Dooped Donuts

1555 Broadway St, Detroit, MI 48226
The only vegan donut shop in Detroit! This sugar spot is frying up the most creative handmade donuts in town. They do have traditional favorites like glazed and chocolate sprinkle but for the adventurous, be sure to sink your teeth into a dirty chai (chai glaze topped with coffee drizzle), strawberry basil matcha (matcha glaze with a dollop of strawberry basil compote), along with many others. The flavors rotate regularly.
