Lisbon Vegan Bakery Guide: 7 Spots for Pastel de Nata + More

The first time I visited Lisbon, the idea of a vegan pastel de nata was laughable. At that point in time, the vegan wave hadn’t hit the city. Luckily, that all changed during the pandemic. I’m not sure if people became more aware of their health or realized that Lisbon is a happening place to visit and that they need a green makeover, but whatever it was, I’m here for it!

So, now you might be wondering what you’re apt to find in this sunny city.

Today, Lisbon is often highlighted for its plant-powered prowess, which includes a delectable array of sweet treats. You’ll find vegan cakes, ice cream, and those famous custard pastéis de nata throughout the city!

When your sweet tooth needs a treat, don’t miss one of these fantastic vegan and vegan-friendly bakeries and dessert spots!

The Best Vegan Bakeries in Lisbon

#1 Scoop n Dough

R. das Portas de Santo Antão 78, 1150-269 Lisboa, Portugal
Two words for you: vegan donuts and ice cream! Do you really need to know more than that!? Founded in 2015 by two brothers because they couldn’t find ultra creamy and decadent vegan ice cream. They spent three years perfecting their recipe, and man, did it pay off — they’ve won award after award for their ice cream and donuts, and it wasn’t just from vegan media!

On the donut side of things, you’ll find creative, yeasted donuts topped and filled with a sinful array of sweets. A few favorites include rosé + strawberry & mascarpone, carob & dulce de leche cheesecake, and pannacotta & blueberries! The flavors rotate, so who knows what you might find! Now, on the ice cream side of things, all their creamy flavors are made by hand with a base of oats, cashews, coconut, or a mix. You’ll find dreamy flavors like cookie dough and brownie, black sesame, raspberry cheesecake, and more!

Treat tip: from time to time, they also have handmade chocolates, macarons, and cookies!

#2 Vegan Nata

Multiple locations throughout Lisbon
Alright, here’s what I bet you all came for: the famous pastéis de nata! Some may say that you really didn’t go to Portugal without trying these traditional custard tarts. So, if you’re unfamiliar with these treats, they are traditional pastries originating in Lisbon. The base is a light and flaky crust filled with warm vanilla custard (best enjoyed warm) and topped with powdered sugar and cinnamon. Traditionally, the custard isn’t vegan-friendly, but these guys were up for the challenge. Honestly, I don’t think even the most discerning pastel de nata lover would know the difference!

#3 Veganeats Caffe

R. Cavaleiro de Oliveira 42, 1170-088 Lisboa, Portugal
I was surprised to find that this spot is more than just a little coffee shop-type spot! In addition to a dessert case packed with sweets, they have a daily breakfast and lunch menu with options like quiche, sweet potato soup, smoked tofu salad, and more! But you’re after treats, so let’s get onto that!

In addition to the daily food menu, there is a daily treat menu (they post an update on Facebook daily). They’ve got something for everyone — decadent chocolate and peanut cake, cinnamon rolls, strawberry brioche, apple pie, scones, and more!

One tip: Bring a small Tupperware with you and grab a couple of items so you can try a few things (the little bags don’t keep things quite as fresh)!

#4 UAO by Mú – Healthy Italian Gelato

R. Dom Pedro V 145, 1250-094 Lisboa, Portugal
Vegan Italian gelato? Say no more, am I right? I got a kick out of their “truly vegan” signs posted in the shop and even on Instagram — I think people really couldn’t believe the whole shop and its ultra-creamy wonders could be vegan! In addition to being vegan, all the scoops are gluten-free and made without added sugar — I didn’t think that was possible with ice cream! They have a great lineup of classic gelato and sorbet flavors that are all house-made. If you’re a coffee lover, try my favorite nutty coffee mash-up with a scoop of caffe espresso and nocciola Piemonte (hazelnut). Those who prefer fruity scoops have all the classics — mango, kiwi + banana, cherry, strawberry, and many more!

Gluten-free friends, here is a spot just for you! Everything at this modern artisanal bakeshop is gluten-free, and they have a great selection of vegan options. They also take pride in offering healthy treats that are free from refined sugar. When looking for the vegan options on their menu or in the dessert case, look for the “v” leaf. They’ve got options like carrot and nut bars, chocolate truffles, creamy tarts, and more.

#5 Saludê Pastelaria Fit

Av. Santa Joana Princesa 23C, 1700-330 Lisboa, Portugal
Whether you’re vegan, avoiding sugar, or gluten-free, this bubblegum pink bakeshop has something for you! You’ll generally always find a good selection of delicious vegan pastries and desserts on the menu, like coffee cake, brownies, and even vegan cheese bread. If you need more than a slice of cake, they always have three vegan cake options that can be ready in 20 minutes. This is a super idea if you’re celebrating something special while in Lisbon.

#6 Fragoleto Ice Cream

R. do Comércio 15, 1100-321 Lisboa, Portugal
I’m rounding out this sweet treat list with a terrific vegan-friendly ice cream spot in Lisbon—this is especially important if you’re visiting in the summer! Fragoleto caught my attention with its bright red ice cream case proclaiming “organic ice cream” and “biologico.” Now, I know that this doesn’t always mean vegan options, but I always feel like I have the best chance at a place like that, and I was right! They have a great selection of vegan, organic, gluten-free, and sugar-free ice cream options like coconut, mango, and strawberry. In addition to ice cream, they also have a fruity lineup of ice pops and smoothies!
