Edinburgh Vegan Bakery Guide: 8 Spots for Cake, Donuts & More

I’ve had the pleasure of spending time in Edinburgh twice — once as a broke college student and then as a less broke adult. It’s incredible how much the city’s vegan scene has taken off between those two visits. I remember as a college student struggling to find vegetarian options, let alone a vegan donut or cake — that was a laughable proposition at best.

But today, you can find all of that and more! During my last visit, I didn’t have enough time to make it everywhere, which I feel goes to show just how many options you have to check out!

When your sweet tooth is in the mood for a treat, you must visit one of these fantastic vegan bakeries and dessert spots in Edinburgh. You will find everything from perfectly golden pastries to over-the-top decadent donuts — enjoy!

#1 Considerit

3, 5A Sciennes, Newington, Edinburgh EH9 1NH, United Kingdom
Vegan donut (and chocolate) lovers, get ready to eat your heart out! This vegan spot might have too many tasty treats to try (is it possible to have too many?). And because they have so many delicious things that you have to have, it shouldn’t come as a surprise if you wander up to the storefront and are met with a line that trails outside! When I got there and saw that, I thought, oh no, they won’t have anything left for me! (Don’t worry, they did)!

They specialize in chocolates, but they also have a variety of vegan baked goods, including cakes, brownies, and epic donuts. These donuts are anything but basic — you’ll find creative flavors like chocolate long bois filled with raspberry, chocolate caramel, Boston cream, rhubarb and custard, plus many more.

What to get: donuts & chocolate! These guys have the best vegan yeasted donuts in town. Oh, and they have house-made ice cream — don’t skip a milkshake!

#2 Missy’s Vegan Cupcakes

34 Buccleuch St, Newington, Edinburgh EH8 9LP, United Kingdom
So, now that we’ve gotten your chocolate and donut fix out of the way, let’s move on to luscious little vegan cupcakes! This charming baby blue bakeshop knows how to delight a crowd with super delicious and creative cakes. In their dessert case you might get lucky and find little chocolate cupcakes topped with marzipan mushrooms, pretty in pink jammy dodger topped cakes, and more.

In addition to having a regular assortment of treats you can pop in and grab, you can also order custom cakes and cupcakes —they have so many creative designs!

What to get: It’s simple, cupcakes! Missy knows her cakes, and when you’re in Edinburgh, you’ve got to try them.

#3 Holy Cow

Two locations in Edinburgh
This isn’t a technical bakery, but they know how to make a delicious cake, and their location at 1 Dundee Street offers a fantastic afternoon tea and delicious vegan breakfast options (they’ve got it all!). First things first, no matter which location you visit, you will always find a tasty assortment of desserts and house-made baked goods, like strawberry shortcake cupcakes, decadent Ferrero chocolate tart, Biscoff cheesecake, and more! One thing to keep in mind is that their desserts rotate regularly, so if you’re in the mood for something specific, check their IG.

Over at the Dundee location, you can enjoy a vegan afternoon tea service complete with all the traditional sweet and savory treats! You’ll find mini sandwiches, house-made scones with clotted cream, coffee cake, and more. But there’s one more bonus: on top of being vegan, the afternoon tea is gluten-free! You do need to make reservations (at least two days in advance for afternoon tea).

What to get: Make reservations for the afternoon tea service — how many places can you get scones with vegan clotted cream? Not many!

#4 Chapter One Coffee Shop

107 Dalry Rd, Edinburgh EH11 2DR, United Kingdom
How does an oat milk latte and a massive cinnamon roll covered in sweet icing sound? Or maybe a golden and flaky croissant? Or a mini red velvet cake? Well, you can get all of that and more here! This cute independent coffee shop knows way more than how to make a delicious cup of coffee; they also know their way around cakes and desserts!

Every day, their cake stands and pastry cases are filled with an irresistible assortment of house-made cakes, cookies, croissants, cupcakes, and much more!

What to get: A mini-Victoria sponge cake (if they have it) — these light and fluffy cakes are layered with sweet strawberry filling and cream. If it’s not in stock, you can’t go wrong with anything they’ve got!

#5 Black Rabbit

33 Brougham St, Edinburgh EH3 9JT, United Kingdom
At first, I thought that a vegan deli and coffee shop wouldn’t have desserts and baked goods! But man, was I wrong. They’ve got just about everything, and let me tell you, you’re going to want one of everything (maybe bring a Tupperware with you)!

Every day, their dessert case is filled with an outrageous selection of cakes and pastries; seriously, you won’t find anything basic there! Depending on the day, you might discover cruffins filled with black currant jam and custard, charcoal and white chocolate croissants, chocolate salted caramel cakes, and more.

What to get: EVERYTHING! Seriously, they make it really difficult to choose just one thing here. But if you’re a pastry lover, you can’t go wrong with a cruffin!

#6 Green Bite Cafe & Bakery

63 Inverleith Row, Edinburgh EH3 5PX, United Kingdom
This welcoming café is a green beacon in Edinburgh! It’s a bit outside the main downtown sights, but it’s worth the bus ride. Every week, they change up their menu and roll out new desserts and cakes (with a ton of gluten-free options, too). Hopefully, you will get lucky and find their decadent chocolate cheesecake waiting for you when you visit (it pairs perfectly with a chai or latte)!

If not, they’ve got plenty of other cakes, bars, cookies, and more to delight your taste buds!

What to get: Hands down, the chocolate cheesecake, but if that doesn’t tickle your fancy, you can’t go wrong with a slice of any of their cakes!

Vegan-Friendly Bakeries in Edinburgh

#7 Sugar Daddy’s Bakery

8 Roseneath St, Marchmont Cres, Edinburgh EH9 1JH, United Kingdom
With a name like that, how can you not want to check it out? The bright turquoise front of this little bakeshop will absolutely capture your attention (in addition to the name), and once you’re inside, you will be pleased with the selection of vegan options! They have a few classic options — a chocolate brookie (brownie and cookie combination treat), fudge brownies, and their special Sugardaddy O’s (sugar donuts). In addition to that, they also take special requests. Oh, one more important thing: everything is gluten-free, which is a nice bonus for my GF friends!

#8 Babyfaced Baker

341 Leith Walk, Edinburgh EH6 8SD, United Kingdom
Look for the little chalk “vg” on the front of the bakery case at this adorable vegan-friendly bakery! It’s so lovely to be greeted with a pastry case filled with options (honestly, I was surprised by how many options there were)! Treats get rotated and changed up regularly, but you might find peanut slices, s’mores stuffed cookies, toffee apple cruffins, banoffee buns, and more! If you’ve never had a vegan stuffed cookie, you shouldn’t miss your chance here!
