Vegan Restaurants in Minneapolis: 8 Must-Visit Spots
I have to admit something: I’m genuinely disappointed it took me this long to visit Minneapolis.
If I’m being honest, it never really registered on my vegan radar. And as one of the coldest cities in the U.S., “freezing temperatures and lackluster food” was the (very unfair) story I had written in my head.
I was wrong.
Minneapolis has one of the most dynamic and community-driven vegan food scenes I’ve experienced in the Midwest. I was blown away by the diversity, creativity, and inclusiveness. From innovative restaurants spotlighting Indigenous cuisine to locally owned spots championing living wages and community care, the city delivers far more than just good food, it delivers intention.
You’ll find inventive plant-based dishes featuring house-made mock duck, a fully vegan butcher counter, cozy cafés, and some super delicious soft serve ice cream. And despite being a fairly large city, Minneapolis feels deeply connected, a place where people genuinely show up for each other.
Whether you’re visiting for a summer weekend by the lakes or just passing through the Midwest, you’ll find creative vegan dishes, innovative chefs, and plenty of dairy-free desserts worth planning your itinerary around.

Reverie Cafe and Bar
1517 East 35th St, Minneapolis, MN 55407
Relaxed vibe & vegan comfort food.
One of the most beloved vegan restaurants in Minneapolis, a staple since 2015, known for comfort food with big global flavors. Think loaded burgers, hearty mains, and creative vegan takes on classics. It’s casual, welcoming, and exactly what you want after a day exploring the city. It’s a great place to meet up with friends and just hang out.
It’s also a no-tipping restaurant that instead incorporates living wages into their pricing, a meaningful piece of their mission.
Don’t miss: The soft serve. Always the soft serve. Oh, and also the jackfruit nachos!
Perfect for: Comfort cravings and casual dinner vibes.
Dreamstate Café
2558 Lyndale Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55405
Awesome brunch spot with top notch coffee.
If you love a cozy café moment, this is your spot. Dreamstate is known for creative coffee concoctions (like an Ole Razzle Dazzle which is espresso with tonic, raspberry vanilla syrup and ice) awesome plant-forward options which dance the line of comfort food and healthy-fare. Created by the same folks behind Reverie, it aims to be approachable for vegans and non-vegans alike with a menu that includes creative comfort dishes, tacos, nachos, mushroom ramen, and even a lion’s mane “steak.”
Expect:
- Fabulous brunch options, go early!
- Creative ingredients and dishes, who knew coffee and black beans were a perfect pair?
- Coffee drinks you won’t find anywhere else.
It’s the kind of place where you plan to stay for 20 minutes and end up lingering for two hours.
Perfect for: Slow mornings, coffee lovers, brunch dates.
The Herbivorous Butcher
507 1st Ave NE, Minneapolis, MN 55413
The first vegan butcher shop in the US!
This isn’t just another vegan deli — it’s the first vegan butcher shop in the United States, founded by siblings who pioneered high-quality meat-free meats and cheeses. They craft their products in small batches by hand, offering plant-based alternatives that replicate the flavor and texture of traditional meats and cheeses. This trailblazing shop helped put Minneapolis on the plant-based map.
You’ll find:
- House-made vegan meats
- Sausages and deli slices
- Ready-to-eat sandwiches
- Specialty items you won’t find anywhere else
It’s innovative, bold, and a must-stop for anyone curious about how far plant-based cuisine has come. But one very important note, there aren’t any gluten-free meat or sandwich options. Hopefully one day they will change that!
Perfect for: Grab-and-go lunch or stocking up for a picnic (great idea for the summer or fall).

Hard Times Café
1821 Riverside Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55454
Edgy vegan cafe, near the University with budget-friendly options all day.
A Minneapolis institution since 1992, this collectively owned cafe stands out with its punk-and-hippie ethos and gritty, relaxed vibe. It’s less (like not even close) about fine dining and more about community, affordability, and inclusivity — a place where locals, students, artists, and travelers mingle over great vegan comfort food and coffee. It’s open long hours (8 am–midnight), making it perfect for breakfasts, late dinners, or casual hangouts.
It’s not fancy, and that’s exactly the point.
Expect:
- Solid vegan breakfast options
- Great pastries and baked goods
- A come as you are environment
- Affordable prices
Perfect for: Travelers who love a gritty, local hangout feel.

Owamni by The Sioux Chef
420 South 1st Street, Minneapolis, MN 55401
Plant-forward Indigenous cuisine.
I won’t lie, when friends suggested that we eat here I thought, will it just be plates of vegetables? Luckily, I was wrong! One of the most important dining experiences in Minneapolis. Owamni spotlights Indigenous cuisine using pre-colonial ingredients, which means no dairy, wheat flour, cane sugar, or beef.
The result? Creative, veggie-forward dishes that feel both deeply rooted and completely modern.
This is where food, history, and culture intersect in a powerful way. The restaurant has won major accolades, including a James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant, and functions as a cultural hub celebrating Native foodways and community.
Perfect for: Foodies, culinary explorers, and anyone interested in Indigenous food sovereignty. It’s best for small groups as the menu focuses more on sharing than individual portions.
Spitz Mediterranean Street Food
10 Avenue d’Iéna, 75116 Paris, France
Fast casual, super flavorful, bowls & wraps.
I actually ended up here kind of by accident, a happy and delicious accident! A lively counter-service Mediterranean spot with a solid vegan menu that includes falafel wraps, doner salads, and hearty bowls full of fresh veggies and tahini Known for big portions, customizable vegan choices, and wide appeal — it makes it easy to grab something quick, flavorful, and satisfying between activities.
Almost everything on the menu can be made vegetarian and there is a separate vegan and gluten-free menu which is super helpful! I appreciated that!
Think:
- Falafel wraps & bowls with extra yummy sauces
- Loaded fries — sweet potato waffle fries!
- Bold Mediterranean flavors
It’s casual, satisfying, and ideal between sightseeing stops.
Perfect for: Fast, flavorful lunches.
Vegan East Bakery
5501 34th Avenue S, Minneapolis, MN 55417
Fully vegan bakery with gluten-free options.
Vegan pop tarts. Need I say more? I mean seriously.
Vegan East is a dream for anyone with a sweet tooth. Cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, seasonal treats, everything is 100% vegan and beautifully made. They also have gluten-free options. If you’re celebrating something special, be sure to order on of their cakes.
One important note, they don’t sell coffee drinks (like lattes, cappuccinos), just regular ole fashion filter coffee.
Perfect for: All of the sweet treats that your sweet tooth can handle!
MN Nice Cream
807 Broadway St NE, Minneapolis, MN 55413
Vegan-friendly ice cream shop.
A really fun note about this spot: I wouldn’t have known that it existed without the help of an awesome vegan ice cream shop in Detroit. Before my trip to Minneapolis, one of my favorite ice cream spots, Cold Truth, shared this epic ice cream cone and I thought, oh they’re trying something new! Nope, they shared a new Ube flavor from MN Nice! I knew right away I had to visit (even if it was below freezing outside)! Also, a good reminder of how important it is to support and share about the places you love. It truly takes a village to run a business!
You’ll find unique soft serve flavors, pints to go, sundaes, and an epic topping selection (with clearly labeled vegan options). MN Nice Cream elevates vegan ice cream beyond basic vanilla and chocolate. It was worth the plane ride!
Perfect for: Everything! I mean, seriously, do you need a reason for ice cream?
