On our whirlwind adventure through Southwest Florida, we almost skipped St. Pete. I wasn’t sure there was enough time and I thought it was just another beacon for old white people — I was very wrong! St. Pete is a progressive little hot spot with an eclectic mix of shops, people, and vegan food! If we would’ve had more time, I would have spent it there.

Love Food Central

This charming little café is not only 100% vegan but also gluten-free! Located right in the heart of downtown, it’s the perfect spot to share a cheese board on their outside patio and enjoy the day. Their creative menu features breakfast favorites like Sunny Toast (sourdough toast with sunflower butter and bananas) and house-made granola but if you’re interested in something heartier, check out one of their specialty sandwiches or burgers—you really can’t go wrong with their Awesome Burger (house-made beet and black bean burger topped with arugula, roasted cremini mushrooms, avocado, and their special “awesome sauce”). Don’t forget to peruse their dessert case, you won’t be disappointed!

On top of the never-ending lineup of fantastic sushi, you’ll also find plump dumplings, and on select days they serve up bowls of piping hot ramen in a chili lemongrass broth with coconut milk.

They have cornered the market on mouth-watering chili dogs, classic French dip, pastrami Reubens, and so much more! This laid-back spot is so chic and perfect if you’re looking for a dinner spot or a weekend vegan brunch spot in St. Pete. During the week, their dinner menu is filled with a mix of globally-inspired dishes, some of which highlight other local businesses. You must start with their outstanding Grazing Board filled with house-made cheese, seitan salami, jam, crackers, and more. Afterward, you’ve got a hard decision — rich pasta, kimchi fried rice, burgers, and more! If you’re a pasta lover, don’t miss the hearty Bolognese.

When in St. Pete, you must visit this vegan bakery! Yes, you read that correctly a 100% vegan bakery, with gluten-free options to boot—it’s vegan heaven. Their gleaming dessert cases are filled with countless sweet treats like decadent flourless chocolate cake, brookies, flaky pastries (that includes croissants!), and so much more. It takes superhero strength to choose just one of these sweet delights! (I really think you should choose multiple; strength is overrated!).

Good luck deciding between a traditional jelly-filled delight or German chocolate, maple bacon, or eyebrow-raising Florida cream-filled. Which will you choose?

Vegan and gluten-free friends, you can’t miss a stop at the only vegan and gluten-free bakery (that is also soy and nut-free) in the Tampa area! Lucky for us (and you) traffic down Central Ave. moves slowly and as we crept by, a sign exclaiming Plant Love caught my eye! This mother and son-owned vegan ice cream shop is serving up scoops of hand-crafted coconut-based delights from classic strawberry to decadent salted caramel praline pecan to flavorful orange dream. The flavors rotate regularly, so be sure to stop in multiple times to see what they’re scooping up!

Coco N’Ice(Coco Lov)

If you’re a fan of coconut, you’ve got to go to this sweet little shop! This spot is well known for its house-made coconut-based ice creams in fun flavors like passion fruit, carob chili mint, peach saffron, caramel, and many more. The best way to enjoy them is in a crunchy waffle cone topped with creamy coconut whipped cream! In addition to ice cream, they also have berry-filled smoothies and acai bowls. 

Is Tampa (& St. Pete) Vegan-Friendly?

Yes! There are many great vegan restaurants in Tampa and St. Pete — the plant-filled scene is growing! Honestly, I was surprised. I had some preconceived ideas that the options might be lacking or even nonexistent, but I was wrong. These two neighboring towns are filled to the brim with a creative mix of vegan food from donuts topped in a mountain of cookie crumble to a healthy dose of raw cuisine and everything in between.
