Vegan Bakeries Vienna: 8 Spots for Cake & Dessert

The Viennese are no strangers to delicious desserts and cakes. Vienna is the home to many decadent pastries and cakes, like Sacher torte and apple strudel, but sadly, these traditional treats aren’t naturally vegan.

But that’s where I come in!

During my visit to the City of Music, I was on the hunt for every type of sugary treat that I could get my hands on. I found raw chocolate cakes, sweet ice cream, pastries, and more — but that’s not the best part. Since I visited the city, the options have increased!

In recent years, Vienna has witnessed a remarkable surge in demand for plant-based treats, driven by a growing awareness of environmental sustainability, ethical consumption, and health-conscious lifestyles. From artistic pastries to ultra-decadent cakes, Vienna now boasts an impressive array of vegan bakeries, each with a delicious selection of cruelty-free confections that rival their traditional counterparts in flavor and indulgence.

Vegan Bakeries & Dessert Spots in Vienna

#1 Veganista Ice Cream

Multiple locations in Vienna
Even on a cold, dreary day in Vienna, people will line up to get their hands on delicious scoops at these vegan ice cream shops! Every day, these ice cream magicians start their day by making new batches of the most irresistible and creative flavors, all made with natural and organic ingredients. Here’s the hard part: usually, each of their shops has around 18 different flavors on the menu — good luck deciding, or maybe bring friends?

You’ll find traditional classics like chocolate and strawberry, but you won’t want to miss their creative concoctions like carrot cake cheesecake, caramel delight, strawberry white chocolate cashew cups, and many more.

Good to know: One more tasty treat that you don’t want to miss — they have ice cream cookie sandwiches!

#2 Bröselei

Strudlhofgasse 1, 1090 Wien, Austria
This warm and welcoming café believes that food has the power to heal people. The holistic nutritional cultures of Ayurveda in India, China’s five-element diet, and Japan’s macrobiotic nutritional theory all influence everything that is made, from their weekly meals to their gorgeous raw cakes and treats!

Depending on the day, you might find plump chocolate chip cookies, photogenic raw cheesecakes topped with fresh berries, ultra-decadent chocolate tarts, and much more.

Good to know: On top of being vegan, everything is also gluten-free (made with their own self-milled gluten-free flour blend) and free of refined sugars (they use dates, coconut sugar, and maple syrup).

#3 MaranVEGAN

Stumpergasse 57, 1060 Wien, Austria
Ok, this isn’t a full-blown vegan bakery per se; it might be better! It’s a fantastic vegan supermarket with a lovely bakery and dessert counter inside! How cool is that? The shelves are stocked with just about everything you could possibly need — snacks, frozen foods, cosmetics, and more. Once you’re done shopping, head over to their quaint bistro to see what they’ve baked up!

For a supermarket, their dessert and bakery cases are loaded with so many delicious things to try (I was, honestly, a little surprised). You might find orange chocolate tortes, fudgy brownies, creamy cheesecake, and chewy cookies, but it doesn’t end there! Over in the bakery, you will find even more — fresh pastries, sweet buns, and more.

Good to know: MaranVEGAN is a supermarket, dessert shop, & bakery in one! You can shop and load up on sweets at the same time.

#4 Ausnahmsweise

Hofmühlgasse 18/5, 1060 Wien, Austria
When you want to take a sightseeing break and head somewhere peaceful that has cake, come here! This charming café is a little outside the main tourist haunts, but it is absolutely worth the visit.

Every day, a delicious lineup of sweets is baked right on-site! You might find decadent brownie cheesecake, traditional Black Forest cake, banana peanut caramel pie, brownies, and so much more.

Good to know: Aside from being a great place to relax, it is also a can’t-miss spot for my gluten-free friends — everything here is vegan and gluten-free!

#5 Omas Backstube

Obere Augartenstraße 70, 1020 Wien, Austria
Grandma (Oma) knows how to make amazing vegan cakes and pastries — you’re probably going to walk out of here wishing that this grandma could give your grandma some vegan lessons (unless you’re lucky and your grandma is already vegan)!

This cozy spot always has an entire dessert case — if you’re in the mood for veganized Viennese specialties, come here! Their gorgeous Sacher Torte is mouthwatering and decadent, but if you’re not a chocolate fan, there are plenty of other cakes to sample — lemon cream, berry cream, cherry, and more! On top of cakes, you’ll also want to check out their mini berry custard tarts and cookies (maybe take a few cookies for the road).

Good to know: They really know how to make delicious cake here, especially the traditional Sacher Torte!

#6 Allergiker Café

Wiedner Hauptstraße 35, 1040 Wien, Austria
No matter if you’re vegan, gluten-free, soy-free, or nut-free, there is a treat at this inclusive bakeshop with your name all over it! The folks behind this spot want to make sure that no one, regardless of dietary preferences, misses out on a slice of cake or pastry, and I thank them for that! As you might expect, the dessert lineup does change frequently, but you might find Linzer cookies, rich Sacher Torte, berry crumble, and more.

Good to know: This is a great spot if you’re also looking for gluten-free, soy-free, or nut-free options.

#7 Anker Brot

Multiple locations throughout Vienna
Calling all vegan donut lovers! If you’re in the mood for a delicious donut filled with hazelnut cream and topped with delicious chocolate, come here! One note: this is a special (there’s usually one other vegan donut option on the regular menu), so it’s possible it won’t last long. Maybe if everyone buys them, they will (here’s hoping)! Aside from amazing donuts, this vegan-friendly bakery always has something to delight its guests, like giant pretzel sticks, hand-rolled vegetable pastries, classic apple strudel, giant snails (think a big cinnamon bun filled with fruits and nuts), currant pockets, and more!

Good to know: If you’re in the mood for a vegan donut, come here! They also have classic apple strudel (vegan, of course).

#8 Bio Vollwertbäckerei Gradwohl

Multiple locations throughout Vienna
These spots are peppered all over Vienna, and at first pass, I thought, would they really have vegan options? I really need to stop thinking that places won’t because, more often than not, they do, and that’s the same case here! Like quite a few spots in Vienna, this vegan-friendly bakery wants to make sure that everyone can get a treat! Vegan guests might be delighted to find vegan Danish pastries, cinnamon snails, fresh bread, and more.

Good to know: They also have gluten-free and soy-free options!
