Madrid Vegan Bakery Guide: 8 Spots for Cake & Donuts

It always makes me laugh when I meet someone who says, “It’s impossible to be vegan in Spain!” Are you serious? Have you been to Madrid? Or Barcelona? These major Spanish cities have really embraced the green side of life; you can find vegan junk food, fine dining, and even vegan bakeries!

These days, the real challenge of traveling as a vegan is deciding where to eat from the plethora of options! And, you might just find yourself in a similar dilemma in Madrid, especially when it comes to indulging your sweet tooth.

From quaint bakeries tucked away in historic neighborhoods to trendy cafes boasting innovative dessert creations, Madrid offers diverse options to satisfy every vegan sweet tooth. No matter if you’re in the mood for a decadent donut or a massive slice of chocolate cake, I’ll bet you’ll find it and more at one of these vegan bakeries in Madrid.

The Best Vegan Bakeries to Visit in Madrid

#1 Delish Vegan Doughnuts

Two locations in Madrid
If you enjoy donuts, you’re in for a real treat in Madrid. There are only a few cities where I’ve found multiple fully vegan donut shops, and Madrid is one of them. This spot has two locations — you’re in for double the vegan donut fun!

Inside the bakery case, you’ll be greeted with a colorful variety of yeasted donuts covered in sugar and chocolate and stuffed with decadent fillings. I think these creations would even make Homer Simpson proud — they even have a bright pink donut just for him, too! One special donut you might not want to miss is their Brownie Bomb, a plump donut stuffed with brownie cream and topped with chocolate and more brownie pieces. In addition to donuts, they also have a few other tasty sweets like golden croissant rolls, chocolate babka, canelas (think baby cinnamon rolls), and much more.

#2 Bite Me Café

Pl. de la Beata María Ana de Jesús, 2, Arganzuela, 28045 Madrid, Spain
So, I told you that the vegan donut game is strong in Madrid, and that continues at this spot! This cozy café has its own special take on donuts, calling them “Halos.” While it might be fun to wear them as a halo, I think they’re better enjoyed being eaten! Every week, the Halo lineup changes. Check out their Instagram before you go to be in the know! Although, no matter what they have, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed. You might find a strawberry matcha latte halo made with strawberry cream or a classic jelly-filled Halo topped with powdered sugar.

The sugar fun doesn’t stop with donuts; they also have other rotating desserts and treats like cinnamon rolls, brownies, cake, and more! If you need to balance the sugar rush, they also have a breakfast and lunch menu filled with bagel sandwiches, toast, and more.

#3 VegAmazing Doughnuts

Calle del Conde de Romanones, 14, Centro, 28012 Madrid, Spain
Just when you probably thought I was all done talking about vegan donuts, there’s still one more stop to highlight! Can you believe it? It almost seems too good to be true! Unlike the other two spots, this modern bakeshop specializes in handmade donuts. So, if you’re also looking for a ton of other sweets (unless it’s a special holiday) or food, it might not be your jam, but if you’re looking for outrageous donut creations, it is your jam!

Every day, their donut case is filled with the perfect lineup of plump donuts covered with just about every kind of sugar concoction that you can think of—don’t expect anything boring or lackluster here. A few can’t-miss favorites include their sweet apple crumble filled with apple compote and their Lotus donut filled with caramel cream and topped with chocolate, whipped cream, and a Lotus cookie.

#4 Freedom Cakes Diner

C. de Barcelona, 3, Centro, 28012 Madrid, Spain
It’s impossible not to be completely smitten with this bright pink café! From its quirky décor to mouthwatering menu, it’s a place that must be on your radar. It’s not solely a bakery; this spot has a jaw-dropping all-day menu plus a cake and dessert menu! Deciding is next to impossible, you must come hungry and with friends, if possible!

Cake lovers are in for a treat — they are well-known for decadent and over-the-top creations. For the ultimate sugar rush, chocolate fans must try their Death by Chocolate, peanut butter chocolate, or Oreo cake. They also always have a special cake of the month. If you’re in the mood for something outrageous, check out their gigantic Freakshakes! As the name suggests, it’s equal parts creative and crazy. These milkshakes come in various flavors and are topped with cupcakes, cake slices, whipped cream, and more! As if that wasn’t enough, they also have ice cream, cinnamon rolls, cookies, croissants, and more!

Vegan-Friendly Dessert Spots & Bakeries in Madrid

#5 Bombon Heladeria & Café

Pl. de Carlos Cambronero, 1, Centro, 28004 Madrid, Spain
This quirky little café doesn’t have a website; it’s one of those places you’re lucky to stumble upon. I’ll admit, I only investigated it because it had a sign on the front that said “helados veganos” (vegan ice cream) — I can’t ignore a sign like that! In addition to vegan ice cream, this spot has a serious lineup of creamy, organic chocolates. They’ve got handmade chocolates, bar chocolate, chocolate tarts, hot chocolate, iced chocolate espresso — just about every kind of chocolate you can dream up and more!

#6 Mamá Elba Heladería

C. de la Ruda, 15, Centro, 28005 Madrid, Spain
You don’t have to worry about being stuck with just one option at this vegan-friendly ice cream shop! On the ice cream side of things, the vegan options are lengthy! They’ve got fruity faves like melon, mango, mandarin, banana, lime, and more! On the non-fruity side, you can’t skip the multiple types of dark chocolate, mint chocolate chip, or orange chocolate! But, the sweets don’t end there. They usually also have house-made vegan cakes and cookies — the perfect thing to pair with a scoop or two of ice cream.

#7 MARQUÉS Free From

C. de Vallehermoso, 46, Chamberí, 28015 Madrid, Spain
For anyone suffering from food allergies, this vegan-friendly spot is for you! Everything is free from gluten, milk, nuts, and most things are free from eggs (they estimate about 95% of their menu is egg-free). You’ll find a ton of treats, including handmade chocolate! Inside their pastry cases, you might get lucky and find mini chocolate tarts, traditional palmeritas covered in chocolate, cheesecake, apple tarts, and much more!

#8 MadRolls

C. de Bernardo López García, 10, Centro, 28015 Madrid, Spain
This is one of the few bakeries (I only know of one other one) that I’ve found that’s 100% dedicated to cinnamon rolls! Who knew there were a ton of different ways to enjoy these sweet rolls, and the best part? They’ve got vegan options! At the end of their cinnamon roll display is a separate basket with a small sign declaring, “Veganos!” They have three popular cinnamon rolls that they’ve veganized — one topped with Lotus cookie cream, a traditional cream cheese, and one topped with cream and berries! It’s tough to choose, but I think you’ve got to skip the traditional option and go for the Lotus cream or berries!
