Barcelona Vegan Bakery Guide: 10 Spots for Cake & Desserts

Updated April 29, 2024

The first time I visited Barcelona, many years ago, there were no vegan donut shops or delicious spots for decadent cakes. There was sorbet and possibly churros (that is, if they didn’t decide to sneak butter in there). Needless to say, the pickings were slim, and my sweet tooth was sad.

Well, my veggie pals, that’s all changed. Today, Barcelona is home to a variety of vegan bakeries and dessert spots, and it seems just to keep getting better!

During my most recent visit, we found all sorts of downright sinful sweets, and although some of those spots have closed, others have popped up in their place (well, not their exact place, but you get my point). It seems Barcelona has fully embraced life on the green side, and I couldn’t be happier—I bet you will be, too!

So, let’s dive into this Barcelona vegan bakery guide without further ado!

Vegan Bakeries & Dessert Spots in Barcelona

#1 Areca Bakery

Carrer del Torrent de l’Olla, 90, Gràcia, 08012 Barcelona, Spain
A massive cartoon donut man decorates the wall at this vegan bakeshop, declaring, “Too good to be plant-based (they say).” Cementing the impression that this hip bakeshop has terrific vegan donuts and likes to have fun— a place I wouldn’t mind visiting every week (or maybe every other day — too often?).

Once you say hey to the donut man, you must make a beeline to their gleaming donut case. Lined up like a little sugar army, you’ll find super creative vegan donuts, brownies, cookies, cinnamon rolls, and more! Seriously, these donuts are showstoppers; they have flavors I haven’t seen anywhere else — Bikini Heura Ham & Vacka Cheese (a salty donut with delicious veggie ham and cheese in the middle that’s sourced from a local vegan company) and Catalan Cream (decadent Catalan cream-filled donuts that’s covered in burnt sugar.

What to order: Bikini Heura Ham & Vacka Cheese—you won’t find this anywhere else, so don’t skip it!

#2 La Besnéta

C/ de Torrijos, 37, Gràcia, 08012 Barcelona, Spain
No matter if you want to sit and sip a cappuccino while indulging in a golden croissant or need a sweet treat while you wander Barcelona’s gorgeous streets, La Besnéta has something for you! As soon as you walk through the doors of this warm and welcoming spot, you’re greeted with a long table filled with the most charming display of cupcakes, muffins, cookies, and more! But, that’s not all!

In addition to the wonderful treat buffet, two dessert cases are filled with more decadent cakes and super practical mini dessert jars. I love these dessert jars — they are super handy when you want a treat but don’t have the time to sit down and enjoy it. The mini dessert jars come in various yummy flavors like dulce de leche, tiramisu, chocolate cake, and more!

What to order: One of those handy dessert jars — they’re delicious and small enough that you could take two for the road!

#3 The Vegan Corner

Carrer d’Ataülf, 5, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona, Spain
Every city corner, or maybe corners, needs to have a vegan corner! This charming spot is more than just a great place for vegan treats; it’s also an excellent café. On the sweet side of things, their café counter is filled to the edge with so many delicious things — truly, it’s a game of, how big is my bag because I need one of everything! You’ll find sugar-dusted and chocolate-filled croissants, plump donuts, mini cakes, cookies, and more. See what I mean about wanting one of everything?

If you need something to balance all that sweetness, the all-day café has terrific sandwiches, house-made quiche, and more! No matter what you choose, it all pairs perfectly with an oat milk latte or cappuccino!

What to order: A chocolate-filled croissant (or a plain one if that’s too much for ya) — these buttery and flaky pastries are a dream come true.

#4 Hanai Vegana

C/ dels Carders, 28, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona, Spain
Gluten-free friends, save this spot on your Google Maps, write it on your hand, send yourself an e-mail —  whatever you’ve got to do, so you don’t miss this vegan and gluten-free bakery! Yes, you read that correctly. You can indulge in absolutely everything; you don’t have to settle for just one thing! But, wait, it gets even better. This spot prides itself on absolutely stunning artisanal pastries. I actually went to their website and Instagram twice because I didn’t think it was true, but it all looks that good and is vegan AND gluten-free!

OK, so where to start? This is a hard one because places like this don’t exist everywhere or have this level of quality. I’ve never seen a croissant with such light and fluffy layers before (that’s vegan and gluten-free). Usually, they’re pretty dense. Whatever these guys are doing, it’s absolute magic! In addition to pastries, you’ll also find decadent chocolates, cakes, pies, and more.

What to order: EVERYTHING! No joke, I’m not even kidding a little. This place is extraordinary, and I don’t think I have been anywhere with this level of quality for vegan and gluten-free treats.

#5 Santa Vegana

Carrer de n’Arai, 1, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona, Spain
Tucked into Barcelona’s popular Gothic Quarter, right across from a lovely, open plaza, is this charming vegan bakery and café! It reminds me a little of The Vegan Corner — a welcoming spot perfect for a sugar-filled break but also has some incredible food options, if you need a little balance!

Their bakery case is filled to the brim with many fantastic things to try — powered sugar-topped donuts, golden fruit-filled pastry, adorable mini fruit tarts, cupcakes, and more!

What to order: I have a hard time saying no to a fruit tart — the combo of cream and berries gets me every time, but reviewers rave about their donuts! Maybe get both!

#6 La Conscience BCN

C. de Viladomat, 134, L’Eixample, 08015 Barcelona, Spain
OK, I’m not sure what’s going on with Barcelona’s love affair with artisanal vegan and gluten-free bakeries, but I’m here for it! Honestly, I think after this, I should look at housing prices because these crazy, amazing treats make me want to stay!

You’ll find baskets filled with perfectly risen rolls (soft and fluffy, not the usual hockey puck), beautiful mini cheesecakes, donuts, raw desserts, and more. In addition to being vegan and gluten-free, everything is also organic, and as the name suggests, they’re very conscious about their ingredients and sourcing, so if you have a question, ask!

What to order: A creamy mini cheesecake and BREAD! I know bread is kinda funny, but if you’re gluten-free, you know how hard it is to find good gluten-free bread; some of it should be banned from store shelves.

#7 Bungnuts

C/ de Santa Eugènia, 16, Gràcia, 08012 Barcelona, Spain
If you didn’t have a chance or aren’t near the magical donuts at Areca Bakery, your donut dreams aren’t dashed; Barcelona has two vegan donut shops! Can you believe it? Every day, this bright and colorful spot is baking up a storm with its house-made donut masterpieces.

They have a stellar mix of traditional and unique yeasted donut flavors, like a good old-fashioned donut covered in chocolate or a sugar glaze. If you’ve had your fill of traditional flavors, you’re in for a treat. For cookie lovers, you don’t want to skip their Bowie donut, a yeasted donut filled with Oreo cream and then covered with Oreo pieces and white chocolate! If that doesn’t tickle your donut fancy, then Gevalt will! It’s a yeasted donut filled with pistachio cream and topped with more cream, pistachio pieces, and dried raspberries.

What to order: That’s really a hard question because everything is amazing. I think the best answer is a mini Bungnut pack that comes with its three classic flavors!

#8 CrudiCakes

C. del Comte de Güell, 25, Local 1, Distrito de Les Corts, 08028 Barcelona, Spain
For some people, sugar isn’t their friend (I’m sorry, that really sucks), and if that’s the case for you, this healthy vegan bakery is for you! All of their products are suitable for people with diabetes and certain food intolerances like soy or gluten (they do use nut products). They don’t make anything with added sugar or trans fats; they use raw agave, dates, and other superfoods to enhance flavors.

Most of their desserts are raw, and they focus on three categories: CrudiBars (brownies and salted caramel), CrudiCakes (lemon, chocolate, vanilla, and more), and CrudiPots (a parfait of tasty ingredients with a creamy filling).

What to order: I am partial to chocolate, and all of their CrudiBars look amazing, especially the salted caramel.

#9 AMMA Gelato

Plaça de la Virreina, 3, Gràcia, 08024 Barcelona, Spain
When it’s eight billion degrees in the middle of summer, nothing is better than a scoop or ten of vegan gelato! Everything from the cones to scoops of salted caramel with peanuts is vegan. The little shop usually has nine fantastic ice cream and sorbet flavors—coconut, chocolate, passionfruit, hazelnut, and more!

But the sweet fun doesn’t end there! They also sell a few vegan baked goods, such as brownies, cookies, and cakes.

What to order: A cookie or brownie and top or sandwich it with a scoop of gelato!

#10 Tonka Pastisseria Vegana

C/ de Verdi, 20, Local 1, Gracia, 08012 Barcelona, Spain
The team behind this spot has been making pastries for years, but not always vegan! After four years of being vegan-friendly, they decided to jump into the vegan pond and figure out how to switch their incredible recipes.

With just a quick look at their bakery case, it’s clear that the Tonka team is on a mission to create beautiful cakes and pies that just happen to be vegan (if they didn’t tell people, no one would know)! You’ll find mouth-puckering lemon tarts topped with meringue, super-rich chocolate cakes, cookies, sweet breads, and much more!

What to order: A slice of key lime pie — meringue isn’t an easy thing to veganize for the masses!
