5 Must Visit Vegan Restaurants in Koh Pha Ngan

Koh Pha Ngan is one of the best places in Thailand for vegan food. But finding truly local, affordable restaurants isn’t as easy as it first seems.

On an island famous for yoga and wellness, you’re never too far from an acai bowl or a ginger shot. Cafés line the roads in Sri Thanu, serving up colorful plates and smoothies that look as good as they taste.

But beyond the polished menus and laid-back beach vibes, there’s another side to the island. A side where simple Thai dishes, hidden roadside spots, and budget-friendly meals still exist, if you know where to look.

JaJa’s Vegan

Thong Sala area, Koh Pha Ngan, Surat Thani 84280

Tucked away along the main road between Thong Sala and Sri Thanu, you could easily miss JaJa’s. But trust me, once you’ve found it, never again will you drive past without stopping for a bite to eat.  I was there almost every day on my last visit to Koh Pha Ngan, which says a lot on an island full of vegan options.

JaJa’s real allure is that it’s one of the only spots on Koh Pha Ngan that really feels like a proper Jay-style restaurant. While most of the island leans towards Western cafés and wellness food, JaJa’s is simple, authentic Thai cooking. The dishes are the same as you’ll find in Jay restaurants throughout Thailand, but the quality and variety really stand out.

And JaJa’s doesn’t care about their dishes being Instagram-perfect. That’s why I love it. The menu is packed with curries, stir-fries, salads, and fried goodies, all fully plant-based. Whatever you choose will be an adventure for your taste buds, full of new flavors and textures.

And whatever you do, don’t leave the island without trying their massaman curry. It’s easily one of the best I’ve had in the whole of Thailand. Prices are a little higher than Jay restaurants on the mainland, but that’s expected. And it’s still noticeably cheaper than most vegan cafés nearby, and far more satisfying if you’re craving proper Thai food. JaJa’s is a must for any vegan exploring Koh Pha Ngan.

Eat.Co

72/1 Moo 8, Sri Thanu, Koh Pha Ngan, Surat Thani 84280, Thailand

If JaJa’s is all about simple, local Thai food, Eat.Co sits at the other end of the spectrum. Located in the heart of Sri Thanu, Koh Pha Ngan’s wellness and vegan hub, this is where the island’s “cool kids” seem to gather.

As I sat there sipping on my second coffee, long after finishing my lunch, I found myself wanting to linger even longer. The atmosphere is super relaxed and everyone seems so open and approachable. I had a few interesting chats with some really great vegans. The menu is huge though, so make sure you aren’t distracted when it arrives at your table.

There’s a strong focus on Western-style dishes, but with plenty of creative, health-focused twists. Think nourishing bowls, hearty sandwiches, fresh juices, and meals that leave you feeling genuinely good afterwards, not heavy or sluggish. It’s food that’s designed around how it makes you feel, not just how it tastes. Luckily, they’ve managed to nail both.

I had the ramen one evening, which was rich, comforting, and packed with umami. And I went back for their “tuna” melt, made with my beloved jackfruit, on my way to catching the ferry and heading home. Sadly, I only discovered Eat.Co towards the end of my trip. But you don’t have to make the same mistake.

Healthy, satisfying, and a truly gorgeous setting, Eat.Co ticks all the boxes for any hungry vegan getting into the beach spirit of Koh Pha Ngan.

You’ll love it.

The Quarter – Creative Space Café

94/30 Moo 1, Ban Tai, Thong Sala, Koh Pha Ngan, Surat Thani 84280, Thailand

A relative newcomer to the lineup of vegan restaurants in Koh Pha Ngan, The Quarter is a spot I couldn’t wait to visit. With a slightly different energy to many of the other vegan options on the island, it definitely didn’t disappoint. And it lives up to its name with confidence.

The space itself feels creative in a way that’s hard to fake. The old furniture and treehouse vibes create a distinct personality. I felt right at home. And that creativity most certainly carries through to their food.

The menu is relatively simple and almost all Western, you won’t find many Thai dishes here. But the quality is so high that it really doesn’t matter. Everything is fresh, wholesome, and carefully put together. But it was their presentation and plating skills that really shocked me. For such a simple menu, their food is absolutely stunning. From daisies in my matcha latte to a sandwich that looked like something from a fairytale, I was very impressed.

Hummus on toast, a coffee, and a croissant don’t sound particularly inspiring. But both dishes, along with my drink, not only tasted but also looked amazing. Everything that comes out of their kitchen satisfies your eyes as much as it does your appetite. And a note on their coffee, I think it might be the best on Koh Pha Ngan.

So, if you’re after something a bit different from the yogi vibes but don’t fancy Thai food at a JaJa’s or the next restaurant on our list, The Quarter has you covered.

Colorful Hut Plant-Based Thai Kitchen

Nai Wok Bay, Moo 1, Koh Pha Ngan, Surat Thani 84280, Thailand

You’d be surprised how difficult it is to find proper vegan Thai food on the beach in Thailand. From Phuket to Rayong, I’m forever driving inland for my dinner. So you can imagine my excitement when I discovered Colorful Hut. Just outside Thong Sala and set right by the waves, it’s exactly what I’d been looking for.

Their menu is built around Thai classics, but their dishes are slightly adjusted for a Western palate compared to somewhere like JaJa’s. That said, it still hits the mark. Everything I ate there was fresh, balanced, and easy to keep going back to. Don’t miss the larb tofu with mushroom. It’s a Thai staple that’s been veganized perfectly. I still dream about it to this day.

Sipping on a cold beer with your feet in the sand, what could be better than tucking into a zingy papaya salad, crunchy spring rolls, and a tofu green curry as you watch the sun go down over the Gulf of Thailand. At the end of an incredible dinner, you’re in for another pleasant surprise. An equivalent feast at Eat.Co might set you back $30. But at Colorful Hut, a meal for two with drinks is unlikely to cost more than $15.

For a beachfront restaurant on Koh Pha Ngan, it’s one of the most reasonable you can find, and it’s fully vegan. If you love Thai food, you’d be mad not to give Colorful Hut a go. One more thing, the restaurant is also part of a hostel — check it out!

Pure Vegan Heaven

Two locations on the island.

Last but not least, Pure Vegan Heaven is a name you’ll likely come across more than once in Thailand. They have a couple of locations in Phuket, two in Chiang Mai, one on Koh Samui, and two on Koh Pha Ngan. Yet, each one still feels relaxed, personal, and not like a chain in the negative sense.

The menu is extensive, and probably one of the most varied you’ll come across. It leans heavily into fusion, with a mix of Western dishes, Asian-inspired plates, and a few creative combinations that you don’t see everywhere else. I visited the branch at Sri Thanu and went for the mushroom quesadilla, along with a side of sweet potatoes. Both were hearty, full of flavor, and left me wanting more despite being rather full.

There simply wasn’t enough time to explore their whole menu, which I was rather disappointed about. The tacos look amazing and I’ve heard their pasta is great. Whether on Koh Pha Ngan or at one of their other locations, I can’t wait to go back.

They do have Thai food on the menu, too, but it isn’t what I’d personally choose at a place like this. JaJa’s is number one for Thai on Koh Pha Ngan, second is Colorful Hut. But Pure is always going to be a good choice for any hungry vegans. It’s consistent, comfortable, and colorful.

I’ve been to three of the six branches, and loved my time at all of them. I’m sure you will too.
