Top 5 Vegan Restaurants in Toulouse, France

This guide to the top five vegan restaurants in Toulouse is the last in our series exploring the best cities to eat plant-based in France. We’ve already visited Nice, Marseille, and Lyon.

And although Toulouse may not pack quite as much of a punch as the rest when it comes to vegan variety, it still has plenty of gems to power your adventures around the city. And what a city it is!

Also known as “La Ville Rose,” Toulouse feels both elegant and lived-in. It’s a city that’s been shaped as much by centuries of history as by the steady rhythm of life along the Garonne.

When the brick façades glow softly from morning through to golden hour with warm shades of rose and terracotta, it’s hard not to fall for the city’s beauty.

But there is one caveat. I hope you like coffee.

Vegan Restaurants in Toulouse: Where Plant-Based Cafés Are King

Maybe a more appropriate title for this blog would be “Top 5 Cafés in Toulouse, France.” Breakfast and lunch are never a problem in La Ville Rose, but options are somewhat limited when it comes to dinner.

So, as stunning as the city of Toulouse is, I’ve personally never felt the need to stay more than a few days. Nonetheless, it should definitely be on any comprehensive itinerary for a trip around France. Full of history, culture, and magical moments, skipping it would be missing out.

And I know you’re not a fan of missing out. So here are my top five vegan restaurants (mostly cafés) in Toulouse, France.

Café Brûlé

12 Rue Alexandre Fourtanier, 31000 Toulouse, France

Simplicity, quality, and a fridge full of vegan cheese are all you need to win me over. Café Brûlé delivers on all three and doesn’t try to do much else, but that’s exactly what makes it so special. In the heart of Toulouse, without doing anything fancy, Brûlé has created a café that feels like home away from home. Wholesome, welcoming, and alive. It’s a community space that anyone, vegan or not, can enjoy.

Having a small grocery store within the café helps to create that warm atmosphere, and could be a solution to the modest dinner options in Toulouse. A few bits from here, a freshly baked baguette, and a bottle of red are a recipe for a gorgeous evening in one of the city’s many parks.

But sorry, I may have jumped the gun. Let’s head back to Brûlé and allow me to tell you all about their delightful menu.

The best way I can describe the food at Brûlé is a warm hug on a crisp fall day. I’m not normally a fan of pancakes, but I was rather intrigued by their innovative interpretation. Adorned with scrambled tofu, crispy plant-based bacon bits, and tonkatsu sauce, I’d never tasted pancakes like them and am not sure I ever will again.  I also got to try their “Autumn Pita,” which was stuffed with seitan and plenty of other goodies. Their roasted baby potatoes were perfect and the Biscoff cookie is what dreams are made of.

For such a wonderful experience and amazing food, the price is fantastic. You won’t want to miss Brûlé when you’re in Toulouse.

Le Canithé

1 Rue des Trois Renards, 31000 Toulouse, France

There are a few things that make a good café great. Delicious food, nice coffee, and a warm atmosphere help. But there is one more thing that, if we’re so lucky, we all excitedly tell our loved ones about long before even mentioning what we ate and drank.

That thing has four legs, a wet nose, and a wagging tail.

An encounter with a dog in a café is something we all adore (even you cat lovers out there), but they don’t happen nearly often enough. This is not the case at Le Canithé. Home to a pack of cuddly canines, Le Canithé offers quality time with our furry friends alongside a 100% vegan menu.

But as conscious creatures ourselves, it’s important to note that the resident mutts at Le Canithé are not there to entertain. Their well-being takes precedence above all else, and they are free to rest or interact at their own pace. Sadly, this also means that it’s not possible to bring your own dog.

I had the best time playing with Oia, a gorgeous beagle, and the whole experience was a joy. They really care about the animals, and even work with Musotopia to help promote the adoption of cats and dogs in the region. Yet, none of this detracts from Le Canithé producing some of the best food I ate in Toulouse. With Oia by my side, keen to get involved, I enjoyed a generous slice of tart followed by a piece of banana bread that well and truly hit the spot.

If you’re a hungry vegan who loves dogs, Le Canithé is the café for you.

Bep Chay

22 Rue des Couteliers, 31000 Toulouse, France

Vietnamese cuisine may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you picture southwest France, but Bep Chay doesn’t care. Although not fully vegan, it’s a flavor-packed vegetarian restaurant that transports you straight to the banks of the Mekong. Bep Chay answers our calls for a dinner option and does so much more. Stylish and lively with obvious Vietnamese influence, lanterns glowing above and the vibrant chatter of locals, there aren’t many better places to spend an evening.

Almost everything at Bep Chay is plant-based, with the few outliers being clearly marked on the menu. And speaking of that menu, wow! Not since my last trip to Vietnam have I seen so many authentic dishes in one place. Of course, their dishes are veganized and adjusted to appeal to Western palates, but I was very impressed at how close the flavors were to the real thing.

Some of those flavors can be found in Bò Kho Chay noodle soup. My happy place is slurping down this tomato-based broth with vermicelli, potato, veg, and soy protein. But that description doesn’t do it justice. The team at Bep Chay has nailed the complex flavors and I couldn’t get enough. The papaya and mango salad added a zingy and refreshing contrast, and the (beyond) crunchy spring rolls contributed the perfect variety of texture. All in all, it was one of the best Vietnamese meals I’ve had outside of Vietnam.

The ideal remedy to spice things up after endless croissants and vegan bourguignon, Bep Chay is a true star in a place you’d least expect it.

Bloomy Rive Gauche

11 Place Olivier, 31300 Toulouse, France

If you’re looking for the best vibes and versatility in Toulouse, Bloomy Rive Gauche wins every time. From a family feel at brunch to Bombay Sapphires and tonics capping off a charming evening meal, Bloomy does it all. This café-come-restaurant sits just west of the river, across the Pont Neuf bridge from the historic center of Toulouse. The area that surrounds it is creative and community-minded, with an artsy feel that runs through the DNA of Bloomy itself.

It clearly made an impression on me. I visited for lunch but had to come back again for dinner another day. The menu was too enticing and I was eager to see how it would transform come nightfall. What also really impressed me was the variety they offer. If you’re feeling exotic then you could go for a Lebanese salad. If you’d rather stay local, their croque monsieur was delightful. Of course, I had to try their smash burger. I’d never had one before and was completely blown away, top five burgers I’ve ever had for sure.

There’s a real sense of energy throughout the whole café, and you can feel it in the food too. From dishes presented exquisitely, as if they came straight from a fine dining kitchen, to utter simplicity, Bloomy can do it all. And they really give back to the community too, with pizza nights, all-you-can-eat buffets, and even DJ sets. So keep an eye out on their calendar, and join the Bloomy community, even just for a night. You won’t regret it!

Junga

81 Bis Avenue des Minimes, 31200 Toulouse, France

Fun is the name of the game at Junga. And when you’re craving something a little naughty, some familiar flavors reimagined with a creative twist, Junga has you covered. From one quick glance at their branding, a cartoon toucan with a rainbow beak on a bright yellow sign with Junga in bold, pink lettering, you know you’re in for a treat.

And the color only continues as you step inside, let alone when your food is served. Fluorescent pink hot dog buns and jet-black burgers take your eyes on an adventure before you’ve even taken a bite. Granted, it may not be the best place to come if you’re super health-conscious. But the bright minds behind Junga have done their best to turn “junk” food into something special.

I certainly felt no guilt making my way through a “Toucan Burger” that was packed with plant-based nuggets and vegan cheese, slightly more than my half of some cauliflower ribs, and tater tots for good measure. I was full for sure, but that normal sluggishness that creeps up when you eat too much fast food was nowhere to be seen. Let’s be honest, it’s not somewhere you’ll be telling all your friends and family about. But it is something most of us enjoy from time to time, and personally, I’m grateful to have the option as a vegan.

So if you do fancy a cheeky “Gorilla Burger,” maybe a “Hot Flamingo” hot dog, or even an “Eggy Bougy” muffin, no one’s judging. Travel is all about letting go and having fun, and Junga certainly knows a thing or two about that..
