I didn’t have sky-high expectations for Istanbul when it came to vegan restaurants and food. I figured there’d be a couple of spots tucked away somewhere, but I also braced myself for a whole lot of meat. After all, Türkiye has a well-known love affair with meat and dairy — someone even told me, completely seriously, “Do you know how hard it is to make soup without butter?” At that moment, I couldn’t help but think: What have I gotten myself into?
But Istanbul had a surprise or two up its sleeve.
While Türkiye isn’t exactly a vegan haven, Istanbul is definitely on the rise. I didn’t just find a handful of options — I found veganized döner, meatballs smothered in creamy cashew yogurt, vibrant salads bursting with pomegranate and herbs, and creative twists on traditional dishes that left me more than impressed.
No, Istanbul isn’t the most vegan-friendly city in the world — but it’s far from the least. And if you visit these spots, you’ll eat very, very well.

It took two tries to dine here. My first attempt was met with a closed sign due to a holiday (although online, it said open). I sat hungry and bummed out on their stoop, acting as an unofficial messenger to others who tried to enter. The charming spot is tucked into a residential building in a quiet neighborhood; honestly, if you weren’t looking for it, you wouldn’t know it was there (a hidden vegan gem).
They have a small indoor dining area that reminds me of being welcomed into someone’s home, which leads into a lovely back garden space (complete with a kitty). The menu is a beautiful fusion of Turkish delights with global inspiration. I highly recommend their stuffed eggplant, topped with tangy tahini. With one forkful, you can tell that every ounce of this dish is made with so much care, from the rich tomato sauce to the zesty dressing on the salad. You should also try and save room for dessert — you can’t go wrong with a slice of housemade cheesecake or apple pie!

This is one of those places that you’ll wish you could go to more than once (especially if you’re GF). I actually thought I would be able to squeeze in an extra visit to my itinerary, but I didn’t have quite enough time to make it there and to my flight — next time!
With that in mind, be sure to prioritize visiting here at the start of your Istanbul adventure. What this tiny vegan restaurant lacks in space (just a small indoor seating area), it makes up for in the quality and creativity of its veganized Turkish dishes. While many traditional Turkish dishes are far from vegan-friendly, even the most carnivorous Turks couldn’t deny that the food here is incredible — from bold flavors to texture, they’ve covered all the bases. I ordered the kebab, and although it’s not the most photogenic thing, it was super tasty. As I mowed down the kebabs, the table next to me got an order of meatballs with eggplant, and for a moment, I thought, am I still hungry?

When I first ventured over to the Anatolian (Asian) side of Istanbul, my first thought was, ‘Holy hell, there are so many people over here.’ For some reason, I had expected it to be less busy, but I hadn’t factored in that it was a holiday, and there are a couple of streets where everyone congregates. Once you get past those, it becomes way more chill, and you’ll stumble upon this vegan gem.
This little family-run spot is perched on the corner of a quieter neighborhood, offering a peaceful setting to enjoy a meal. The menu is massive; I was overwhelmed! It seems they have veganized just about every meaty Turkish dish you can imagine and more. Since I couldn’t decide, I had my server help (I find this is always a good thing to do). She said her favorite dish was their special meatballs covered in a cashew yogurt — it wasn’t something I would usually choose, but I went for it and am glad I did. The combination of the savory meatballs with the tangy cashew sauce was fantastic! I wish I could’ve saved room for an order of her mom’s stuffed cabbage — I haven’t had it since I was a kid.

My first introduction to Istanbul’s stairs was on my way to find this quaint Asian spot. After a full-on booty workout, I was relieved to see that this spot was indeed open (it was a public holiday, and places don’t always update their info online) and to stuff my face with a plate of Pad Thai with extra tofu. Now, this version of Pad Thai might have a bit of Turkish inspiration (or maybe confusion over my GF request) — it was a little more zesty noodle with tofu. Still, it was enjoyable, especially with a little kitty company and a coconut cold brew. They have a pretty decent lineup of options. If Turkish Pad Thai isn’t your thing, perhaps curry or rainbow rolls are more to your liking?

As I was wandering through the quieter streets behind Galata Tower (I promise, they exist!), I just happened to find this delightful vegan café. Actually, I feel like it was looking for me, with its chalkboard sign proclaiming “vegan, coffee, & fresh juices.” It’s like they already knew me! Whether you visit for breakfast or lunch, you’ll find plenty of options (I actually visited twice, as it was conveniently close to the second hotel I stayed in).
For breakfast, try the vegan platter filled with fresh veggies, beans, cheese, housemade tofu, and toast! If that’s too much, you can always opt for an order of toast with veggie toppings, acai, or a matcha bowl. After almost entirely taking down their vegan breakfast platter (I ran out of time), I knew I was ready to tackle the day!

I played the game of, I have 26 hours left in Istanbul; how many vegan restaurants can I visit? I really wanted to try more Turkish options, but it’s a bit of a challenge since I’m gluten-free. As I scanned the reviews of Wegain, a few people mentioned “gluten-free,” so I figured that’s promising.
The menu is limited, with just a handful of Turkish and Lebanese-inspired options, but after being overwhelmed by the numerous options at other spots, it was kind of nice to have just a few things to choose from. In actuality, there was only one for me — kebab! I wasn’t really looking to try more kebab, but when in Istanbul! I appreciated that their version didn’t come with a mountain of rice but instead an extra kebab. It had a great smokey flavor with a little kick from their hot sauce. Whether you’re looking for doner, kebab, or just a Turkish coffee, this cozy place is a great spot to enjoy it.
Galeyan Restaurant

Vegan-friendly Turkish restaurant in Sultanahmet.
I would’ve usually walked right on by a place like this — it’s tucked down an alley with a bunch of other restaurants and plenty of people trying to get your attention. On top of that, it’s also right in the heart of some of Istanbul’s most popular sights. Generally, these things spell expensive and not vegan-friendly!
With all that said, this spot came recommended to me by a local Turkish guide. He said he really enjoys bringing people here and that they would have options, so I figured I had to check it out, and luckily, it was only a short walk from my hotel. My first impression was positive — the menu was well-marked! This isn’t all that common in Istanbul. They offer a mix of mezze dishes, featuring many vegan options, allowing you to create a vibrant combination of grape leaves, pomegranate-infused salad, hummus, and more. It’s a great spot when you need a sightseeing break in the Old Town.
