6 Vegan Resorts in Puerto Rico to Visit Right Now

Why didn’t anyone tell me that Puerto Rico is quietly becoming a paradise for vegans?! In the Caribbean, Aruba often gets a lot of praise (and for good reason), but Puerto Rico is no slouch. I’d like to think that the island’s commitment to sustainability and the growing demand for plant-based options has led to the increase in vegan or vegan-friendly resorts, but many of these spots have been around for quite a while!

What has changed is that many larger resorts are starting to pay attention and are being influenced by the growing interest in a more plant-filled way of life. You can enjoy the island’s vibrant culture, stunning beaches, and lush landscapes without starving!

These resorts, retreats, and B&Bs are some of the best vegan-friendly spots on the island—you won’t have to worry about being stuck with a fruit plate at any of them. All of them offer a variety of accommodations that prioritize health, wellness, and ethical dining — there’s something for every type of traveler.

Vegan & Vegan-Friendly Resorts, Retreats, & B&Bs to Visit in Puerto Rico

1. Dreamcatcher Guest House

San Juan
For a unique stay close to the beach, come here! This eclectic boutique hotel is filled with charm, from the colorful wallpaper to the vintage furniture and cozy hammocks; no two spots are the same.

In addition to enjoying Instagram-worthy accommodations, you’ll have access to a fantastic lineup of experiences and food! On the food front, The Dreamcatcher was the first vegetarian hotel in San Juan and features a gorgeous breakfast and brunch (additional cost) with fresh juices and locally-inspired fare, all of which can be made vegan or gluten-free. In addition to breakfast, they also host Friday night chef’s dinners that feature a mix of international cuisine using ingredients sourced from the island’s harvest and agroecological farms.

As if that weren’t enough to have you booking your room, you might also enjoy yoga on the beach, rainforest tours, salsa lessons, and more! Oh, and you’re only a six-minute walk to the lovely beach!

2. La Botánica Hotel

San Juan
It feels like every room and suite in La Botanica has a different story to tell, from the whimsical garden suite to the dramatic glasshouse — they’re all just waiting for you to come and explore (and I’ll bet you will want to come back, too)!

After a restful night, you’ll wake up to a morning yoga session (included with your stay) and a colorful vegan Ayurvedic breakfast that changes regularly to highlight unique dishes and seasonal flavors. Staying on the food theme, the hotel regularly hosts themed vegan pop-up dinners with local chefs. You’ll definitely want to check out their website to see some of the past events —my tastebuds are watering!

Every one-of-a-kind room comes with a cooler for the beach, beach bag, picnic basket, fridge, microwave, coffee maker, and locally curated teas — you might not want to leave! You can also schedule a relaxing massage right in your room!

3. Finca Victoria

Vieques
If you liked La Botanica, you’ll love its little sister, Finca Victoria! Located on the picturesque island of Vieques, Finca Victoria offers a peaceful and eco-friendly haven for those seeking a mindful escape. This boutique vegan retreat is nestled amidst lush tropical gardens and perched on one of the highest points on the island, providing fantastic ocean views.

Like La Botanica, each room and casita is uniquely designed with natural materials and thoughtful touches, ensuring a comfortable and harmonious stay. A stay here will be far more memorable than any other traditional hotel in Puerto Rico!

Every morning, you can enjoy a complimentary Vinyasa Flow yoga class and a fresh vegan, Ayurvedic breakfast filled with antioxidants and superfoods — you’ll leave here feeling good! They also occasionally host vegan dinners, but unfortunately, there isn’t a regular dinner service; because of that, it’s recommended that you rent a car so you can easily get into town.

For an ideal Puerto Rico vegan getaway, spend time in San Juan and then visit Vieques!

4. Casa Grande Mountain Retreat

Utuado
If you want to get off the beaten path and out of the city, this is one spot you need to check out! Tropical forests surround this boutique retreat and boast breathtaking views, providing a tranquil environment to relax and rejuvenate. Here, you can enjoy their saltwater pool and hiking trails and are close to stunning waterfalls.

When I said you were getting off the beaten path, that means physically and electronically—an important thing to know is that there is no WiFi. Your phone service should still work, and they do offer a business center equipped with iPads that you can use, but if you can’t “check out,” this might not be the spot for you!

Their onsite restaurant is run by two talented plant-based chefs who whip up a flavorful array of breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. The menu changes seasonally, but you might find papaya and coconut crepes, fluffy pancakes, burritos, and many veganized Puerto Rican favorites!

5. Rainforest Inn B&B

Rio Grande, El Yunque National Forest
This boutique bed and breakfast provides a gorgeous jungle escape on the edge of the El Yunque National Forest. Each suite and villa is tastefully decorated with rustic elegance, featuring private patios or balconies that open up to stunning tropical landscape views.

Reviewers rave about the included vegetarian (it can be made vegan if you ask in advance) breakfast that greets guests every morning. If you have an early start, they’ll even bring it to you in your room. You will need to rent a car, as dinner isn’t available onsite (but they can provide lunch if you request it in advance).

The inn offers a range of activities, including guided rainforest hikes, yoga sessions, and bird-watching tours, allowing you to immerse yourself in El Yunque’s natural beauty.

6. Yuquiyú Treehouses

Rio Grande, El Yunque National Forest
If you haven’t had the opportunity to stay in a treehouse, here’s your chance! The treehouses are tucked along the side of a lush canyon and are inspired by the small wooden houses typical on the island well over a century ago. You might only be an hour away from San Juan, but you’ll feel like you’re a world away!

No matter which treehouse you decide to stay in, you’ll be greeted with a fridge stocked with everything for a fantastic plant-powered breakfast — granola, coconut milk, cashews, yogurt, and fresh fruit. Just make sure to request nondairy creamer if you enjoy it in your coffee. The onsite restaurant and all the treehouses are meat-free zones; they ask all guests to respect that when bringing food onto the property. Instead of getting your own food, you should book a spot for dinner at their restaurant, which focuses on healthy plant-based cuisine. The menu changes regularly but always celebrates local flavors; you might find Puerto Rican pastel cooked in a banana leaf or a lentil burger with sweet plantains.

Now, staying here isn’t for everyone as it’s not a traditional hotel. They don’t offer a concierge, room service, or air conditioning (the winds keep things comfortable), and you’ll need to carry your own luggage. The property also has crushed rock trails and stone stairs, which might be challenging for some to maneuver.
