#1 Vegan-Friendly Islands in Thailand: Koh Pha Ngan

If there’s one island in Thailand where I felt that being vegan was completely effortless, it was Koh Pha Ngan. You’re never more than a short walk or drive from your next meal (we even took one of our vegan tours here).

Fully vegan cafés, bakeries, smoothie spots, and restaurants are everywhere, to the point where it’s just as easy to be vegan as it is to not.

But it’s not all about quantity. The quality is great too.

Koh Pha Ngan leans heavily into its wellness reputation. Think nourishing bowls, fresh juices, raw desserts, and meals designed to leave you feeling good long after you’ve finished eating. That said, it does come with a trade-off.

Compared to the rest of Thailand, there’s less traditional Thai food and not even a handful of Jay restaurants on the island. The vegan scene is almost exclusively Western and health-focused.

But for most of us, that’s part of the appeal.

There’s a strong sense of community on Koh Pha Ngan, too. Yoga studios, coworking spaces, and beachside cafés all feed into a lifestyle where plant-based living just fits naturally.

If you’re looking for the easiest, most seamless vegan experience on any Thai island, this is it! Make sure you check out our recommendations for the best vegan spots on Koh Pha Ngan.

#2 Phuket: Diverse Vegan Eats

I have a love-hate relationship with Phuket.

But let’s start with the positives. I was on the island back in February, and the sheer variety for vegans is next level. From local markets to shopping malls, and beachside restaurants to tucked-away backstreet spots, you’re never far from something vegan. And it’s not all cafés and smoothie bowls.

A big part of that comes down to Phuket’s Thai-Chinese heritage. Phuket Town is home to some of the best Jay restaurants in the country. They serve up authentic, fully-vegan curries, soups, stir-fries, and so much more. Yet it’s difficult to leave having spent more than $3 per person. The island also has plenty of more familiar, and expensive vegan restaurants. It truly offers the best of both worlds.

But it’s busy. Very busy.

For an island surrounded by big blue ocean, it’s amazing how you can sometimes feel as if you never left Bangkok. That said, if your priority is food, it’s hard to beat. Phuket might not have the same laid-back, plant-based lifestyle as other islands. But for variety, flexibility, and access to some of the best vegan Thai food going, it’s right up there.

And you can explore the best vegan restaurants in Phuket.

#3 Koh Samui: Popular Vegan Getaway

It’s been a while since I was last on Koh Samui. But fond memories of beautiful sunsets and incredible vegan feasts still linger rent-free in my head. It combines a lot of what Koh Pha Ngan and Phuket do so well, while also managing to add its own character to the mix.

From a vegan perspective, it’s a breeze. I never found myself worrying about where I’d eat next.

There are plenty of wonderful fully-vegan spots and a decent variety of cuisines on the island, too. Most restaurants also have vegan options clearly marked on their menu, or will veganize dishes for you without any issues. It might not have the same density of vegan choices as Koh Pha Ngan, where vegan food feels like part of the culture, but it never feels limited either.

And although it doesn’t quite match the variety you get in Phuket, it’s far less chaotic. Granted, it’s not quite as peaceful as the last two islands on this list either, but it’s not too overwhelming. Vegans have more than enough choice to keep things interesting, without ever needing to plan our days around food.

So if you’re looking for a smooth and reliable plant-based trip, Koh Samui is a very easy place to be.

#4 Peaceful Veggie Bliss on Koh Lanta

Koh Lanta was the highlight of my adventures in the south of Thailand earlier this year. But from a vegan perspective, it’s not all smiles.

It’s calm, beautiful, and was the peaceful remedy we needed after Phuket. The stunning beaches stretch on for miles, rarely feel crowded, and our days on them disappeared at an alarming rate.

There are a handful of great vegan spots on the island, plenty for a short visit, but maybe not enough if you were staying weeks. We found ourselves going back to the same place on the beach most nights. Not to say that there aren’t other options, but we could walk there for sunset and the menu was versatile enough to keep things exciting. It’s a wonderful restaurant that you’ll find in our Krabi vegan guide.

We also cooked at home quite a bit. Local markets are full of fresh fruit and vegetables, and we were buzzing to find vegan cheese and butter. Nothing beats a sandwich on the beach. Koh Lanta may not be a vegan paradise, but it doesn’t try to be. There’s enough here to get by without too much difficulty, especially if you’re willing to cook.

It may not be the most vegan-friendly on this list, but it’s certainly one of best islands you could choose to spend your holidays.

#5 Vegan-Friendly Island in Thailand: Koh Phayam

Without a doubt, Koh Phayam is my favorite place in all of Thailand. There are no cars on the island and it’s not the easiest to get to, but that’s what makes it so special. The journey keeps the crowds away. It’s slower and quieter in the best possible way.

And it’s home to the best beaches I’ve ever seen. Jungles that sing at sunrise and sunset. And nature that pays a visit whenever it chooses.

There are a few dedicated vegan spots dotted across the island, which are all delicious, and plenty of restaurants happy to make something plant-based if you ask. You won’t go hungry, but there isn’t endless choice either.

It’s real island life. That means snacking on fresh fruit, locally grown cashews, and sipping from a coconut you saw uncle pluck from the tree. Embracing it means enjoying clean eating, trying new things, and not panicking if lunch is pushed back into the afternoon.

That’s why you come to Koh Phayam.

If you’re looking for ultimate comfort, convenience, and a predictable island experience, there are better places on this list. But if you want something that feels like a real adventure, somewhere truly memorable, Koh Phayam is the one.

And I must give a quick shout-out to Koh Samet and Koh Chang too, both great but not quite making it onto the list. If you’re exploring eastern Thailand, they have some fab vegan restaurants to keep you going for a short trip. And if you leave Bangkok early, you can be on Koh Samet by lunch. It’s a smart choice if you’ve not got long but still need some beach.
