Our Mission

At Veggies Abroad, we believe travel can, and should, be a force for good. That means exploring the world with compassion, intention, and a commitment to do no harm to people, animals, or the planet.

We know that tourism can create jobs, foster cross-cultural connection, and protect nature — but only when it’s done responsibly. That’s why our work is rooted in transparency, ethics, and local impact.

Whether you’re fully vegan or simply seeking to align your travels with your values, we’re here to guide you on meaningful journeys that leave a lighter footprint and a bigger impact.

Why This Matters.

Travel has the power to uplift or exploit. While it connects cultures and supports livelihoods, it can also strain natural resources, deepen inequality, and leave local communities behind. You might be surprised to learn:

  • Women make up more than half of the global tourism workforce, yet fewer than 7% of CEOs in the leisure travel industry are women.
  • On average, in developing countries, only $5 of every $100 spent by tourists stays in the destination, sometimes it’s even less. Learn more about this on the Veggies Abroad Vegan Travel podcast.
  • In some regions, tourists use 8x more water per person than local residents, exacerbating water scarcity that already affects over 40% of the global population.
  • And the cruise industry? It generates 24% of ship-based ocean waste, and a single vessel can emit as much CO₂ as a million cars.

But here’s the thing: it doesn’t have to be this way.

Tourism can be a powerful driver of sustainable development, supporting goals like ocean conservation, inclusive economic growth, and climate action. In 2024 alone, the travel industry contributed over $10.9 trillion to the global economy and supported 357 million jobs—about 1 in 10 worldwide. That means travelers have the power to direct that influence toward good.

At Veggies Abroad, we believe in using that power wisely. By being transparent about what we support, and what we don’t, we aim to help more travelers make informed, values-aligned choices. This isn’t about being perfect. It’s about making progress and building a kinder, more equitable world, one trip at a time.

We Champion Travel That

  • Keeps more money in local communities by working with locally owned accommodations, restaurants, and guides.
  • Uplifts animal welfare by avoiding all experiences that involve exploitation, such as riding, bathing, or selfies with animals.
  • Reduces environmental impact by supporting low-impact activities, advocating for plant-based food, and promoting intentional travel choices.
  • Celebrates culture respectfully by partnering with locals and prioritizing immersive, educational experiences.
  • Welcomes everyone who wants to travel with intention —regardless of where you are on your plant-based journey or how you identify. If you’re committed to making thoughtful, compassionate choices, you belong here.

Travel Activities We Don’t Support

  • Activities involving the use of animals for entertainment (no dolphin rides, deep sea fishing, or elephant baths here).
  • The purchase or traffic of items made from exotic or endangered animal products.
  • Activities that involve children, including visits to schools, orphanages, or performances by children. These experiences may seem meaningful but are often exploitative.
  • Mega cruise lines because of their environmental footprint and the negative effects they often have on local communities and ports.

Partnerships That Reflect Our Values

To ensure we stay accountable to our mission, we work with organizations and companies that share our commitment to ethical exploration.

World Animal Protection

We travel with care — choosing animal-friendly experiences and responsible practices that leave a positive impact. To ensure that, we worked with WAP to develop our wildlife and animal welfare policy.

Certified B Corp Partners

Many of our tours and client itineraries are built in partnership with B Corp-certified companies, including Intrepid Travel, who prioritize environmental and social impact.

Local changemakers

From ethical animal sanctuaries to community-led projects, we seek out meaningful, responsible partnerships in every destination.
