Today you’ll take the scenic route to Monteverde (approximately 3 hours in total). Before departure enjoy an optional Paddle or Kayak activity and continue to Monteverde, which was founded as an agricultural community in 1951 by a group of North American Quakers – they cleared virgin forest to create verdant pastures. These environmentally aware settlers were conscious of the danger that unrestricted settling and farming could cause to this precious habitat. Consequently, they established a small, privately owned wildlife sanctuary, which has since grown to become the internationally renowned Monteverde Cloud forest Biological Preserve.
Perhaps start your exploration with a tour of the suspension bridges that hang
in the trees, or head to the Serpentarium to see some crawly critters. More than 2000 species of plants, 320 bird species and 100 different types of mammals call Montverde home. As the sun sets over Monteverde, the nocturnal creatures of the forest begin to stir, and a whole new chorus of chirps and calls begins.
Tour participants will walk the trails of Cloud Forest Nature Reserve in search of its nighttime residents led by an experienced naturalist guide. Frogs, snakes, armadillos, bats, two-toed sloths, insects, and sleeping birds are just of few of the creatures you might encounter. Your guide is adept and spotting wildlife and will share fascinating facts about the area’s natural history as you explore.
