Destination: Nairobi
Meals Included: Welcome dinner

Jambo! Welcome to Kenya!

After arriving in Nairobi, transfer to your hotel and settle in. If you arrive early, you’ll have some free time to relax at the hotel or head out and explore. You might visit the Nairobi Gallery, which features a collection of Kenyan art and cultural exhibits, or simply unwind by the hotel pool.

This evening, meet your local leader and fellow travelers for a welcome meeting at 6 PM. Afterward, head out for your first group dinner together—a great opportunity to get to know everyone and kick off your Kenyan adventure.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

After breakfast, we will head to the Ol Pejeta Conservancy (about a 4-hour drive). Upon arrival, we will check in and have lunch at the lodge. After a short rest, embark on your first game drive in Ol Pejeta. Your guide will help you spot and identify various wildlife species, which may include elephants, lions, giraffes, rhinos, zebras, and more.

Included Activities:

  • Ol Pejeta Conservancy – 4WD afternoon game drive.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today, you’ll spend a full day exploring Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a renowned wildlife and conservation area at the foothills of Mount Kenya.

Start the day with an early morning game drive, one of the best times to spot animals while they’re most active. Keep an eye out for elephants, rhinos, predators, and a variety of plains wildlife as you explore the conservancy.

Later, visit Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, the only chimpanzee sanctuary in Kenya, where you’ll learn about its work caring for rescued chimpanzees. Then, return to camp for lunch and some time to relax.

This afternoon, head back out for another game drive, with more opportunities to search for the Big Five and discover the conservancy’s diverse landscapes before returning to camp for dinner.

Included Activities:

  • Ol Pejeta Conservancy – 4WD morning game drive
  • Ol Pejeta Conservancy – Chimpanzee sanctuary visit
  • Ol Pejeta Conservancy – 4WD afternoon game drive

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today, you’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at some of the conservation work taking place at Ol Pejeta Conservancy.

Meet the conservancy’s K-9 anti-poaching unit and learn how these specially trained dogs and their handlers help protect the area’s wildlife. You’ll also take part in a dog-tracking activity and learn more about the training and skills used by the team in the field. Closed-toe shoes are recommended, along with sunscreen and a hat.

Later, join Ol Pejeta’s Rhino Monitoring Team to learn how rangers track and protect the conservancy’s rhinos. The team closely monitors individual rhinos, knowing each by name and home range, and you’ll gain insight into the daily work involved in protecting these incredible animals.

Included Activities

  • Ol Pejeta Conservancy – 4WD safari
  • Ol Pejeta Conservancy – K-9 anti-poaching unit dog-tracking activity (Available once daily at 8:30 am)
  • Ol Pejeta Conservancy – Rhino monitoring and identification (Available daily 6:30 am – 8:30 am and 3:30 pm- 5:30pm)

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast, say goodbye to Ol Pejeta Conservancy and travel south through the Great Rift Valley to Lake Nakuru National Park. The drive takes approximately 4.5 hours, and you’ll arrive at your lodge in time for lunch and some time to relax and enjoy views of the lake and surrounding acacia woodland.

This afternoon, head out on a 4WD game drive through the park. Lake Nakuru is known for its abundant birdlife, including seasonal flamingo populations, and is an important sanctuary for both black and white rhinos. As you explore, keep an eye out for lions, buffalo, Rothschild’s giraffes, zebras, leopards, and other wildlife.

After the game drive, return to your lodge for dinner and the evening.

Included activities:

  • Lake Nakuru National Park – 4WD afternoon game drive

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Rise early for a morning game drive through Lake Nakuru National Park, when wildlife is at its most active. Keep an eye out for the park’s black and white rhinos, along with Rothschild’s giraffes, buffalo, lions, and perhaps even a leopard among the acacia woodlands. After the game drive, return to the lodge for breakfast before continuing to Lake Naivasha, approximately 2 hours away.

After lunch, travel by boat to Crescent Island, a wildlife sanctuary on Lake Naivasha. Along the way, keep an eye out for some of the lake’s birdlife, including African fish eagles.

Once on the island, set out on a 90-minute to 2-hour walking safari, where you’ll have the chance to walk among giraffes, zebras, antelope, and wildebeest. With no large predators on the island, you can explore on foot while enjoying the open grasslands, acacia trees, and views across the lake. Parts of Out of Africa were also filmed in the area, thanks to its classic Great Rift Valley scenery.

Later, return to your resort and enjoy some free time before dinner.

Included Activities:

  • Lake Nakuru National Park – 4WD morning game drive
  • Lake Naivasha – Boat transfers to Crescent Island
  • Crescent Island Game Sanctuary – Guided walking safari

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Depart Lake Naivasha early this morning and travel toward the Loita Hills, home to the Maasai community you’ll be visiting today. Along the way, make a short stop in Narok and stop for lunch before arriving at Tepesua Village.

Tepesua Village is a community initiative focused on supporting Maasai women through education, health programs, and economic opportunities. You’ll be welcomed with traditional Maasai song and dance before learning about Maasai culture and warrior training from your local host.

Continue on foot to the community village, which was established to support Maasai widows who traditionally cannot inherit property. Here, you’ll learn about the Tepesua Widows Income Project and how it provides women with opportunities to earn an income and support themselves and their families.

Later, continue to the Maasai Mara, arriving at camp in the late afternoon. Head out on your first game drive across the savannah, keeping an eye out for elephants, giraffes, buffalo, antelope, and some of the Mara’s predators as wildlife becomes more active in the cooler afternoon hours.

Return to camp in the evening for dinner.

Included activities:

  • Loita Hills – Cultural talk and village visit
  • Maasai Mara National Reserve – 4WD afternoon game drive

A note about our Tepesua Village visit: Cattle and animal-derived foods have traditionally played an important role in Maasai culture, and this may come up during our visit. At the same time, Tepesua is doing incredibly important work to support women and girls through education, economic opportunity, and greater autonomy. We’re proud to support their efforts and ask travelers to approach the experience with curiosity, respect, and an open mind. Many past travelers have shared that this was a highlight of the trip for them.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Rise before dawn and head out for an early morning game drive in the Maasai Mara. Wildlife is often most active during the cooler morning hours, making this a great time to explore the reserve and see what you can spot.

Depending on wildlife movements, you may return to camp around midday for lunch and some time to relax before heading out again for an afternoon game drive, returning around sunset. Alternatively, you may stay out for a full-day game drive, with a picnic lunch along the way.

This evening, meet with a conservationist from the Mara-Meru Cheetah Project to learn about their work studying and protecting cheetahs across the region. You’ll hear about the challenges facing these vulnerable cats, the research being done to better understand and protect them, and what to look for when you head into the Mara alongside the conservationist tomorrow.

Optional Activity

For a different perspective of the Maasai Mara, you can also add an optional sunrise hot air balloon ride. You’ll be picked up before dawn and transferred to the launch site, where you’ll meet your pilot and receive a safety briefing before taking to the sky. Float above the plains as the sun rises, with views across the Mara and the wildlife below. After landing, enjoy a bush breakfast before returning to camp.

Please note: The hot air balloon ride can be pre-booked to guarantee your spot. It may also be possible to book locally, but availability is limited and the activity is popular, so booking in advance is recommended if this is something you don’t want to miss

Included Activities:

  • Maasai Mara Game Reserve – Morning 4WD game drive
  • Mara – Meru Cheetah Project Conservation talk
  • Maasai Mara Game Reserve – Afternoon 4WD game drive

Optional Activities:

  • Balloon safari – USD 500 per person

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Spend another day exploring the Maasai Mara, beginning with a special morning 4WD game drive alongside a conservationist from the Mara-Meru Cheetah Project. As you search for wildlife, you’ll gain firsthand insight into cheetah behavior and the important research and conservation work helping protect them and their habitat.

Return to camp for some time to relax before heading out again in the afternoon. Every game drive is different, and your local guides will follow wildlife movements as you explore the Mara’s vast open plains and diverse landscapes.

Included Activities:

  • Maasai Mara National Reserve – Morning 4WD game drive alongside a conservationist from the Mara-Meru Cheetah Project
  • Maasai Mara National Reserve – Afternoon 4WD game drive

Meals included: Breakfast, packed lunch.

Enjoy breakfast at camp before checking out and beginning the journey back to Nairobi, approximately 6 hours away.

Upon arrival, you’ll be transferred directly to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your departing flight. Say goodbye to Kenya and your fellow travelers as your adventure comes to an end.

Important

Please do not book an international flight departing before 8 PM today. The drive to Nairobi can be affected by traffic and other unexpected delays, so this allows plenty of time to reach the airport for your flight.

  • This was our first group guided tour…

We were uncertain about letting someone else organize us, and nervous about potential group dynamics. I am delighted to say that I thoroughly recommend Veggies Abroad. Rebecca’s organization was exceptional. Our local guide Katie was warm, knowledgeable and a sheer force of nature.

  • First time traveling with Veggies Abroad, but certainly not the last.

Initially, a tour of Portugal wasn’t on my list, but so happy I went. It was a nice mixture of the local food and cultural experiences along with a bit of personal time to explore on our own. My favorite part though was the people that Rebecca brought together in the group.

Is This Tour For You?

This trip is perfect for travelers who value incredible wildlife, meaningful conservation, and authentic cultural experiences. If you’re excited by unforgettable wildlife encounters, and learning from the people protecting Kenya’s natural heritage, you’ll feel right at home.

Before you book, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • This is a journey of learning as much as sightseeing. Throughout the trip, you’ll encounter different cultures, customs, and perspectives. We encourage everyone to approach these experiences with curiosity, respect, and an open mind, even when they differ from what you’re used to.
  • Expect early mornings. The best wildlife viewing happens around sunrise, so many game drives begin before breakfast. The early wake-up calls are well worth it when you’re watching lions, elephants, or rhinos as the savannah comes to life.
  • Some travel days are long. Kenya is a vast country, and reaching its spectacular national parks means spending time on the road. While some roads can be rough and bumpy, the ever-changing landscapes and wildlife sightings along the way are all part of the adventure.
  • You’ll travel in open-sided safari vehicles. Our 4WD safari vehicles aren’t air-conditioned, but the open windows provide a refreshing breeze and unobstructed views for wildlife viewing and photography.
  • Road conditions can be rough. Parts of the drive might be quite bumpy and dusty, we do our best to mitigate that as much as possible.
  • Vegan meals are thoughtfully prepared, but may be simple at times. We’ve worked closely with our lodges to ensure delicious vegan meals throughout the trip. However, you’re traveling in remote safari destinations where ingredients and specialty products can be limited.
