Scotland Key Travel Information

Trip Overview

Is this trip right for you?

While the pace is relaxed overall, several days include walks on uneven terrain, and the optional hike in Fort William is more challenging. Scotland’s weather can also be unpredictable, so it’s important to come prepared for changing conditions. If you’re looking for a small-group adventure that combines stunning scenery, local culture, and memorable vegan experiences, this tour is a fantastic way to discover the Scottish Highlands and beyond.

How physically challenging is the trip?

This trip has an easy to moderate activity level and is suitable for travelers with a reasonable level of fitness. It offers a great mix of sightseeing, scenic walks, and time outdoors. While most activities are not strenuous, you’ll spend plenty of time exploring on foot, whether you’re wandering through historic towns, visiting castles, or walking along nature trails.

The optional hike in Fort William is the most challenging activity of the trip, covering approximately 10 km (6 miles) with 475 m (1,555 ft) of elevation gain. Scotland’s weather can also be unpredictable, so be sure to pack sturdy walking shoes and waterproof layers to stay comfortable throughout the journey.

Where does the trip start and end?

Your adventure begins in Glasgow, Scotland’s largest city, where you’ll meet your tour leader and fellow travelers at the welcome meeting on Day 1 at 6:00 PM. We recommend arriving at least one day early if you’re traveling a long distance or would like extra time to explore the city before the tour begins.

The trip concludes after breakfast on Day 8 in Edinburgh. There are no activities planned for the final day, so you’re free to depart at any time. If you’d like to spend more time exploring Scotland’s historic capital, we recommend extending your stay for an extra night or two.

Airport transportation

This trip begins in Glasgow, and the closest airport is Glasgow Airport (GLA), located approximately 20 minutes from the city center.

The easiest way to reach your hotel is by taxi, which typically takes around 20–30 minutes, depending on traffic. You can also take the Glasgow Airport Express (Service 500) to the city center, followed by a short walk or taxi ride to your hotel. Your final hotel details will be provided prior to arrival.

If you’d prefer a seamless start to your trip, we can arrange a private airport transfer between the airport and the tour hotel for $135 USD each way. This service can be added during the booking process for a stress-free arrival.

What are the included hotels?

During this 8-day, 7-night trip, you’ll stay in a carefully selected collection of comfortable, centrally located hotels, making it easy to explore each destination while providing a welcoming place to relax at the end of the day.

In the unlikely event that something changes, we may need to substitute a hotel with a similar property.

Are laundry services available?

Most of the included hotels do not offer on-site laundry facilities, but hotel reception or your tour leader can recommend a nearby laundrette or local laundry service if needed.

What are the included transportation options?

All transportation during the tour is included, so you can simply relax and enjoy the journey. You’ll travel by a combination of private vehicle, train, and taxi, including the famous West Highland Line, one of Scotland’s most scenic railway journeys.

Please note that airport transfers are not included, but a private transfer between the Airport and the tour hotel can be added during booking for $135 USD each way.

Included activities

This trip includes a variety of guided experiences designed to help you connect with Scotland’s landscapes, history, and culture.

Highlights include traveling aboard the famous West Highland Line, exploring the Isle of Skye, visiting Eilean Donan Castle, cruising the legendary waters of Loch Ness, and discovering Edinburgh on a guided vegan food tour. You’ll also enjoy unique experiences like foraging with a local guide, learning about Scotland’s rewilding efforts, and hearing traditional Highland stories during a guided storytelling walk.

Throughout the trip, you’ll experience Scotland through a thoughtful mix of nature, history, local traditions, and incredible vegan food. All activities listed in the itinerary are included unless otherwise noted as optional.

How many people are in the group?

This is a small-group experience with a maximum of 16 travelers, plus a guide (or guides) throughout the trip.

Trip minimum

A minimum of 5 travelers is required to run the trip at the listed price.

Payment dates and refunds

The deadline to secure your spot is June 5, 2027, but many trips sell out well in advance! The deposit is due at the time of booking to confirm your participation and is non-refundable unless the trip is not confirmed.

The final balance is due by June 28, 2027. If additional trip payments are made before the deadline (June 28), they are refundable, less credit card processing fees. After June 28, the trip is non-refundable.

It is advised to get a travel insurance policy that includes cancellation coverage after making the deposit.

If the trip isn’t confirmed

Like most small boutique tour operators, we require a minimum number of travelers to operate our trips. While larger, multi-million-dollar companies may be able to absorb losses, operating responsibly as a small business means we must ensure each trip is financially viable.

In the unlikely event that a trip is not confirmed, several options are available. If the trip is close to the minimum, we may reassess pricing and give travelers the choice to proceed with an adjusted rate. We can also explore planning a private departure for you and your travel companions. Alternatively, you may transfer your deposit to another Veggies Abroad trip, or request a full refund of your deposit if none of these options feels like the right fit for you.

Itinerary disclaimer

Please note that the itinerary is subject to change. We always stay flexible to account for weather, site closures, and the occasional unexpected surprise that’s simply part of travel. Rest assured, any adjustments are made with the best possible experience in mind.

We will also do our best to provide rough estimates on timing, but please note that due to traffic, construction, festivals, closures, etc., there might be changes, or we might not be able to give a firm answer.

Local Partners

To deliver a sustainable and authentic experience, this trip is operated by Intrepid Travel. Veggies Abroad and Intrepid co-create the itinerary, with Intrepid handling all in-destination logistics through their trusted local teams.

Essential Pre-Departure Information

Passports, visas, and entry requirements

All travelers must have a passport that is valid for the duration of their stay in the United Kingdom.

Many travelers, including those from the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and most European countries, will need to obtain a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before traveling to Scotland. Others may require a visa, depending on their nationality. Applications are completed online, and we recommend applying well in advance of your departure.

Entry requirements can change, so it’s important to check the latest information before you travel. The UK Government’s official website provides the most up-to-date guidance on whether you need an ETA or visa and how to apply: UK ETA & Visa Requirements

Medical and health information

Can I bring all medications into the country?

It’s important to be in reasonably good health to fully enjoy this trip, as it includes frequent walking, time spent outdoors, and a few longer travel days between destinations. Some activities take place on uneven or natural terrain, and Scotland’s weather can change quickly, so it’s important to come prepared with appropriate clothing and footwear.

If you have any concerns about your ability to participate in the itinerary, please reach out to us before booking so we can discuss whether this trip is the right fit for you.

Can I bring all medications into the country?

Most prescription and over-the-counter medications can be brought into the United Kingdom for personal use. Keep all medications in their original packaging and carry a copy of your prescription, particularly for controlled medications.

Vaccinations and Health Considerations

There are no special vaccinations required for most travelers visiting Scotland. We recommend ensuring you’re up to date on routine vaccinations before traveling and consulting your healthcare provider if you have any specific health concerns.

Packing Recommendations

Scotland’s weather is famously unpredictable, so dressing in layers is the best way to stay comfortable throughout your trip. Even in September, you may experience sunshine, wind, and rain all in the same day.

We recommend packing comfortable walking shoes, a lightweight waterproof jacket, warm layers such as a fleece or sweater, and a small daypack for carrying your daily essentials during sightseeing and excursions. A reusable water bottle, sun protection, and a compact umbrella are also helpful. If you plan to join the optional hike in Fort William, sturdy hiking shoes are strongly recommended.

No matter the forecast, it’s always a good idea to be prepared for changing weather —you’ll be glad you packed that extra layer!

Travel adapters

Scotland uses Type G electrical outlets, the same as the rest of the United Kingdom. The standard voltage is 230V with a frequency of 50Hz.

If you’re traveling from North America, Europe (excluding the UK and Ireland), Australia, or most other countries, you’ll likely need a Type G travel adapter. Most modern electronics (such as phones, laptops, and camera chargers) are dual voltage and will work without a converter, but it’s always a good idea to check your devices in advance.

We also recommend bringing a portable power bank to keep your devices charged during long travel days and sightseeing.

Spending money

The currency used throughout Scotland is the British pound sterling (GBP). One unique feature of Scotland is that some banks issue their own Scottish banknotes. These notes have the same value as Bank of England notes and are accepted throughout Scotland. However, some businesses outside of Scotland may be unfamiliar with them and choose not to accept them, so it’s a good idea to spend or exchange any Scottish notes before leaving the Scotland.

Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, including contactless payments, so you may not need to carry much cash during the trip. It’s still a good idea to have a small amount of cash for independent purchases, small shops, market stalls, or stops in more rural areas.

Since most breakfasts, dinners, transportation, and included activities are covered, you’ll mainly need spending money for lunches, drinks, souvenirs, optional activities, and personal expenses. Be sure to let your bank know you’ll be traveling and check whether your cards charge foreign transaction or ATM fees.

Staying in communication

Before and during the trip, we will keep in communication via WhatsApp. If you don’t have the app downloaded and set up on your phone, please do so as soon as possible. We will utilize the group chat to share itinerary changes/updates, photos, reminders, and more.

Additional trip considerations

Moderate hikes: This trip includes one moderate hike and a few nature walks on uneven terrain. Participation (in some) is optional, and if you prefer to skip one of the hikes, your tour leader will be happy to suggest alternative ways to enjoy the area.

Stay flexible: Some outdoor activities, particularly the optional hike in Fort William, may be adjusted or canceled due to weather conditions. Your tour leader will always recommend the best alternative if needed.

Hotel check-in times: While we’ll always do our best to have your room ready upon arrival, early check-in cannot be guaranteed. If your room isn’t available yet, you can leave your luggage at the hotel and begin exploring your destination.

Connectivity in remote areas: Mobile phone reception and internet service can be limited in parts of the Scottish Highlands and the Isle of Skye. Consider it the perfect opportunity to unplug and enjoy the scenery.

Bring a reusable water bottle: Scotland’s tap water is safe to drink and known for its excellent quality, making it easy to stay hydrated while reducing single-use plastic.

Destination Overview

Weather

September is one of the best times to visit Scotland, with mild temperatures, fewer crowds, and the first hints of autumn color beginning to appear across the Highlands. Daytime temperatures typically range from 55–65°F (13–18°C), while evenings can be noticeably cooler, especially in the Highlands and on the Isle of Skye.

Scotland’s weather is famously changeable, so it’s not uncommon to experience sunshine, wind, and rain all in the same day. We recommend dressing in layers and packing a lightweight waterproof jacket so you’re comfortable no matter what the forecast brings.

Food: Is Scotland vegan-friendly?

Yes! Scotland has become an increasingly vegan-friendly destination, especially in cities like Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Inverness, where you’ll find a growing number of fully vegan restaurants as well as many cafés and traditional restaurants offering clearly labeled plant-based options.

Throughout this tour, we’ve carefully selected restaurants that showcase Scotland’s evolving vegan food scene, from creative plant-based takes on traditional Scottish dishes to locally inspired cuisine made with fresh seasonal ingredients. While options may be more limited in remote areas like the Highlands and the Isle of Skye, we’ve done the research for you, so you can simply relax and enjoy the experience.

Can you accommodate allergies?

We can do our best to accommodate allergies, but we don’t visit places that are entirely nut-free, gluten-free, etc., so cross-contamination is always a concern. Please be sure to share any allergies or special requirements during the booking process so we can have a conversation and assess if this trip is right for you

Is everyone in the group vegan?

Nope! Our trips bring together a mix of vegans, vegetarians, and veg-curious travelers. The common thread is a desire to travel more responsibly and explore the world through amazing food. If you’re not fully plant-based, you’re absolutely welcome. We just ask that you’re mindful when consuming animal products while with the group, as it can be uncomfortable for some travelers

Tap water

Yes! Scotland is famous for its high-quality drinking water, and tap water is safe to drink throughout the country. We recommend bringing a reusable water bottle to refill throughout the trip—it’s an easy way to stay hydrated while reducing single-use plastic.

Cultural differences

Scottish people are known for being friendly, welcoming, and down-to-earth. A smile, a “please,” and a “thank you” go a long way, and you’ll often find locals happy to offer directions or share recommendations.

While English is spoken throughout Scotland, you may hear regional accents and local expressions that take a little getting used to— don’t hesitate to ask someone to repeat themselves if needed! When exploring castles, churches, museums, and other historic sites, be respectful of local customs and follow any posted guidelines.

One of the best ways to experience Scotland is by chatting with locals, whether it’s in a cozy pub, a local café, or during one of the guided experiences included in your tour.

Tipping

At the start of the trip, we will discuss starting a tipping kitty for any of our activity guides and our driver.

You may consider tipping our tour leader for outstanding service. The amount is entirely a matter of personal preference; however, as a guideline, $8-$10 per person per day is a good standard.

Additional tipping information:

Tipping in Scotland is appreciated but generally not expected to the same extent as in the United States. Many restaurants include a 10–12.5% service charge on the bill, so be sure to check before leaving an additional tip. If a service charge isn’t included, leaving around 10% for good service is customary.

For taxis, it’s common to round up the fare or leave a small tip if you receive good service. Hotel staff and local guides always appreciate tips, but they’re entirely at your discretion.

Wifi and phone access

You’ll have access to WiFi at all of the included hotels, as well as many restaurants, cafés, and public spaces throughout the trip. Staying connected is generally easy, although mobile service may be limited in some remote areas of the Scottish Highlands and the Isle of Skye.

We recommend having an international phone plan or purchasing an eSIM before you travel if you’d like to stay connected while on the go. This can be especially helpful for navigation, messaging, and sharing photos during your trip.

Traffic & Getting Around

Getting around Scotland is easy thanks to its well-connected network of trains and roads. Throughout this tour, all transportation between destinations is included, so you won’t need to worry about navigating on your own.

In larger cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh, you’ll be exploring primarily on foot, while travel through the Highlands and the Isle of Skye is by private vehicle. As with any road trip, occasional traffic or weather conditions may affect travel times, but your tour leader will keep you informed along the way.

Uber in Scotland

Uber is available in Scotland, but only in the major central cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Problems While Traveling & Safety

Emergency contact information

While we always aim to provide the best possible experience, travel can sometimes come with the unexpected. If any issue arises during your trip, it’s important to speak with your group leader or local representative right away. They’re there to help resolve concerns as quickly as possible and ensure your trip stays on track.

We will also provide an emergency number before the trip departs in the event that you run into problems while traveling.

Travel insurance

Travel insurance is highly recommended for all of our trips, and we’re happy to provide you with a recommended company and/or quote. It’s essential to have a policy that provides cancellation, medical, and emergency repatriation coverage.

It’s also best to get the policy after making the deposit, especially if you want coverage for a pre-existing health issue or want to add “cancel for any reason” coverage. If you decide to forego travel insurance, you will be required to sign a travel insurance waiver that states you’re taking personal responsibility for any costs due to cancellation, trip delay, emergency medical, and repatriation should they arise.

Veggies Abroad recommends Travelex and ArchRoam Right. If you need any help with a plan or have questions, please reach out.

Travel advisories

We recommend checking your government’s foreign travel advisory for the most up-to-date information before you go. It’s also important to ensure your travel insurance covers all destinations and activities included in your trip. We suggest saving the emergency consular assistance number for your country while traveling.

Responsible Travel

Responsible travel is at the heart of everything we do. For us, it means creating experiences that respect local communities, protect wildlife, and honor the cultural traditions of the places we visit — while giving travelers a deeper, more meaningful connection to each destination.

In Scotland, responsible travel means connecting with the people, traditions, and landscapes that make this country so unique. Throughout the trip, you’ll support independent guides and locally owned restaurants while taking part in experiences that celebrate Scotland’s natural and cultural heritage, from learning about rewilding efforts in the Highlands to discovering local folklore, history, and traditional foraging practices.

As a traveler, you can help make a positive impact by respecting local customs, staying on marked trails, reducing waste, and supporting the communities you visit along the way. Traveling with curiosity and care helps preserve Scotland’s remarkable landscapes and traditions while creating more meaningful experiences for everyone.

By traveling thoughtfully and intentionally, we can help ensure these destinations remain vibrant, resilient, and welcoming for generations to come — and that our journeys truly give back. Read more about our policies here.

Traveling as a Group

As we journey together, please keep in mind that you’ll be traveling with a diverse group of fellow adventurers from around the world and all walks of life. While you may find common ground on many things, differences in backgrounds, beliefs, and perspectives are natural. We kindly ask that you remain respectful, considerate, and open-minded throughout our time together.

To help ensure a welcoming and inclusive environment, we recommend being mindful of your conversations and avoiding clothing or accessories that are overtly political or could be considered offensive—whether to your fellow travelers or the communities we visit.

Be Mindful of Time

Out of respect for your fellow travelers and to keep our adventures running smoothly, we ask that you arrive on time for all scheduled activities. If you’re asked to be somewhere at a specific time, please make every effort to be punctual so the group isn’t kept waiting.

We’ve found that the most memorable and enjoyable tours are those where the group dynamic is positive and supportive—and that starts with each person doing their part. A little consideration goes a long way in making the experience amazing for everyone.

At Veggies Abroad, we’re committed to creating a safe, respectful, and positive space for everyone—both within our group and in the destinations we explore.
