BRIXY Shampoo Bar Review: Are They Worth Buying?

I’ve not always been an avid user of shampoo bars, which is a bit of a surprise for those who know me! I lean heavily on the crunchy granola side (I’m a vegan, after all), but although my friends raved about shampoo bars, I was a bit of a laggard!

It’s not that I wasn’t intrigued by these little bars. It was that I was set in my ways and also concerned that they’d turn my hair to straw, and I’m guessing that might be your concern, too!

Well, I’ll cut to the chase — I stopped resisting change, jumped on the shampoo bar bandwagon, and haven’t looked back. I’ve tried a ton of bars (read more reviews here), some I’ve loved, some I wish I could’ve given back, and one of them that I love is BRIXY!

Background on BRIXY

I always like to know a little about the companies I support, and maybe you do, too! If not, you can skip this section and jump right into their products.

The founders behind BRIXY were fed up with the amount of plastic waste created daily (less than 6% of it gets recycled) and the harmful endocrine-disrupting chemicals commonly found in beauty products. They set off to create a product that was better for humans and more sustainable for the planet! Their “be better” motto doesn’t end with the bars; they also understand the importance of supporting the work of their local communities and organizations. They donate 1% of their revenue to a non-profit partner every year. They’ve previously supported Save The Whales, Breast Cancer Fund, LIVESTRONG, Environmental Working Group (EWG), and many others.

BRIXY Product Overview

This is an essential note to start with: all of BRIXY’s products are vegan and cruelty-free (they are certified cruelty-free by Leaping Bunny).

Types of Shampoo & Conditioner Bars & Key Info

BRIXY offers three scents of shampoo and conditioner bars; here are a few important points:

  • The three scents are citrus, mint eucalyptus, and coconut vanilla.
  • I haven’t tested all of the scents, but I really liked the mint eucalyptus — it’s a really soft scent, definitely not overpowering. If you’re sensitive to scent, I think it would work well for you.
  • All of the bars are safe for colored hair and PH balanced.
  • The bars are free from soap, sulfates, silicones, phthalates, parabens, palm oil, synthetic scents, and colors.
  • The shampoo bars are focused on “balancing,” and the conditioner bars are focused on “hydrating.”
  • I have “normal” hair and found that the bars worked perfectly, but if you have really dry hair, they might not provide the level of moisture that you want. If you want a really good conditioning bar, try Viori, they’re also a fabulous company!

Bar Packaging & Key Ingredients

All of the BRIXY products are plastic-free! Each bar replaces three 8-oz bottles of water-based shampoo or conditioner—incredible! The bars come in simple paper packaging that can easily be recycled or composted. The packaging is also certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), the most trusted authority on sustainable forest management.

All the bars are formulated with clean ingredients so you won’t find icky things like sulfates, parabens, phthalates, or synthetic scents. The main ingredients are coconut oil, shea butter, argan oil, and provitamin B.

My Experience: What Did I Like? What Didn’t I Like?

Let’s start this section on a positive note with everything I like about BRIXY shampoo bars.

Why I Like Using Brixy Shampoo Bars

#1 The Company

I am the type of consumer that really pays attention to what a company promotes. I will spend more if the company aligns with my ethics and values, so I was really pleased to find that these bars are not only vegan and cruelty-free, but the company also has environmental and community initiatives. They are tackling a massive issue with plastic waste — it blows my mind that in this day and age, less than 6% of the plastic we create is recycled! I try my best to buy less of it, but it’s nice to find companies that are creating more sustainable products, and they acknowledge this is a problem. There are so many companies out there that act like it’s not a problem that they need to tackle when, in fact, it is THEIR problem!

#2 Perfect Amount of Conditioning

Shampoo and conditioner bars contain a concentrated amount of the product, sometimes making them slightly harsh or overly moisturizing. The BRIXY Bars are a perfect balance. The shampoo bars cleanse and rinse perfectly, even when my hair is super gross! The conditioner is just the right amount. I’ve used bars that have left residue in my hair, making it look dirty, but that doesn’t happen with BRIXY. My hair is always soft and shiny after using them.

#3 Simple Ingredients, No Nasty Stuff

It’s fantastic that the ingredients list on these bars isn’t a mile long, but I love that they don’t use palm oil, Sulfates, Phthalates, or Parabens. The last three items have been linked to various health issues, and palm oil is incredibly problematic for the environment.

#4 One BRIXY Bar Replaces Three 8oz Bottles of Shampoo

Isn’t that incredible? One bar usually lasts me at least four months — that’s a whole lot of plastic that I am (and you could be, too) saving! If you’re looking for other ways to reduce plastic waste, check out these compostable kitchen bags from HoldOn.

#5 Travel-Friendly

Honestly, this isn’t just a BRIXY shampoo bar perk, but it does help that they work really well, so I don’t have to worry if my hair will be weird in another country. You don’t have to worry about the bars making a mess in your luggage or taking them out for security screening. You’re also not leaving plastic trash in another city, state, or country, which is excellent!

What I Don’t Like About BRIXY

#1 No Unscented Bar Option

I had a hard time trying to determine a scent via the internet — I’ve had some real fails! I always appreciate an unscented option, so at least I can decide if I like the product before deciding if I want it to smell like an orange or strawberry. If you’re concerned about scent, I recommend the eucalyptus and mint. It’s a really light scent. I honestly wasn’t sure if it was scented at all! Since BRIXY doesn’t use any fake perfumes, I am pretty sure their other scents are probably pretty lovely, and I would really like to try citrus and coconut vanilla (if you try them, tell me)!

#2 No Small Test or Travel Size Options

The bars are absolutely fabulous for travel, and I actually will steal them from the shower and leave my husband with something else so that I can take them. However, the bars are pretty good size (especially the conditioner). It would be nice if they offered smaller sizes, which would be good if you’re trying to decide if they work well for you and also to slip in your carry-on bag!

#3 Only One Hair Type Option

Currently, BRIXY only offers “balancing” shampoo bars and “hydrating” conditioner bars, which work well for many hair types. However, if you’re looking for something specific, you’re out of luck. It would be nice to have options for other hair types, such as dry, damaged, fine/flat, curly, etc. Just to be clear, they’ve worked perfectly for me; I would say I have a normal hair type that is color-treated.

Do I Recommend BRIXY?

Heck, yes! They are one of, if not my favorite, shampoo and conditioner bars. The bars consistently make my hair feel great! I never have to worry that if I don’t rinse my hair for five minutes, I will look like I’m covered in grease. It always feels so soft and shiny. No matter if you’ve used a ton of shampoo bars or if this is your first time trying a brand, I highly recommend you give BRIXY a try.

Where to Buy BRIXY Shampoo Bars

You can buy them from a handful of retailers like Vitacost and Amazon, but it’s easiest to go directly through BRIXY. You’ll always find their latest products, including non-hair care products like face and body wash! I have yet to try the face wash, but the body wash bars work great.
